Looking in to producing...

Ok, before you flame, yes, I have read the sticky and downloaded the Fruity Loops Studio 4 demo.

To get to the point, I've been looking into producing as a hobby. I downloaded the FL Studio 4 demo and played around with various sounds and stuff. Now, I'm ready to start making horribly pathetic attempts at producing horribly pathetic music. Only problem is... I have no fucking idea how to use FL Studio 4 to make songs. Again, YES I HAVE READ THE FUCKING STICKY, but not the manual.

So... where should I start?

well...

check the tutorial flps, included with fruityloops

get urself some nice VSTi synths to play with, check the sticky in this forum.

get together some decent sounding riffs, experiment with various vst synths to see what weird and wonderful sounds u can get.

get ur ass on the web and search for some good percussion samples. (kicks, snares, hats, crashes etc)

chuck it all into fruity and see what u get.

The best way is to check out the songs that come with FL under "projects/cool stuff", find a decent song in there and check out how they did it.

yes check out the projects, VERY usefull...

also later on, if you never composed anything, just draw a line of 8 bars , and press CTRL U in the piano roll...and chop it in a preseted melody and play with it by adding a 4/4 kick etc...

A) Read the Manual
or
B) Spend some time in the program

It would take a HUGE HUGE post to tell you enough just to get you started making crap. So, its up to you. Everyone here will be more than welcome to help you with specific questions about the program.

But in a hopefull attempt to give you a sort of direction:

Learn the step sequencer inside out: Learn how to insert new channels. Learn how to make drum loops, start with a kick hihat and clap, go from there. Learn to level all the channels so they all fit nicely together.

next

Learn the piano roll: This thing is essential, any pattern that changes pitch at all will be done in here (can be done in the step sequencer, but thats tedious), learn how to create simple patterns and melodies. Try starting with bass, add a simple bass synth and create a bassline for it. Start with an offbeat bassline, real easy, kick on the first step, bass on the third. Then go from there, mess around, see what works and what doesnt, and how it changes the feel of the mix.

next

Learn the playlist inside out: Pretty easy here, only thing is learning how to make automation patterns and use them in your mix. This is very important in fruity loops, but not essential for a beginner.

next

Learn the mixer: This use to be called the FX window, because all it did was insert FX onto certain channels, or the entire mix. Now it does much more, allowing extremely precise tweaking of FX levels and EQ and all that. This is your BEST friend in fruity and must be mastered. Start by learning to use reverb and some delay on your synths. Next learn to use the Flanger, Phaser and Chorus. These can make your synths sound great used properly, try experimenting with the presets.

From there learn how to import any new VSTs you BUY (Buy your stuff man, BUY IT), and how to work them properly (what all the knobs and sliders DO). Then from there you have everything you need to get you going. Oh and download samples! New drums and percs, the fruity ones suck. Read the thread on sample sites.

Anyone have anything to add or any corrections?
