Triggering FX in cubase

I'd like to know how to set up a trigger/sidechain in cubase so that when MIDI track A (which controls VSTi A) hits a note, it will send a signal to FX track A that now is a good time to apply said FX to VSTi track B. Basically setting up a chain of events.

I've looked in the manual under "Trigger" "Chain" "Sidechain" and "Link" to no avail.

Edit: Here's a pic if the above was confusing...although the pic might be confusing as well.

Awesome mspaint skills huh?

Have you tried automating the fx to be turned on and off rather than using midi messages.

Yeah, but I'm trying to set it up so it's completely automated, that is, I don't have to draw in any automation. Plus if I wouldn't have to draw in another automation if I decide to somehow change my main pattern.

I'll use an example to make it a bit clearer (although I'm sure Cheggy probably already knows this technique).

Say I have MIDI-controlled percussion. Whenever the kick signal is sent to the drum machine, I also want a signal to be sent to a compressor on the bassline (delayed of course)...that way the kick and the bassline aren't fighting each other. Kick gets the forefront of the low frequencies when it's triggered, and when it's not on, bassline gets forefront.

Anyways, I'm just looking for dynamic flexibility, not static automations, that way I can change things around and still have everything work as expected.

Man, I am soo damn confused right now.

So when the kick is triggered, you want the bassline compressed, and when the bassline comes in, you want the kick compressed?

Would you get the same result if you compressed the samples out of real time, so you compress the kick, then load the compressed kick in the sampler, same with the bass.

Sorry mate, I don't know how to get VST plugins to communicate with eachother like you want. Not sure if its possible, I've never tried. I normally compress my kick by itself externally till it sounds right, then use a multi-band on the master.

i know what you want.. but with cubase it's impossible! (logic can do it afaik)

but a workaround for this bass-drum/-line effekt you can use group-channels and put the compressor in the group-channel and it'll work like you want it.

It's not possible with the actual VST engine (but it will be starting from VST 3.0) but some programmers found workarounds for it. The TC native bundle comes with a SideChain plugin that works wonderfully. So if they can do it, I guess there is probably some 3d party sidechainer out there.

Thanks, that's all I wanted to know. I've used Logic before but don't own a copy...decided to go with Cubase instead. I knew you could set up sidechains with Logic, and I just assumed Cubase had that functionality as well. Oh well...I'll try that workaround thecYrus posted. Thanks.

Here's a copy of a post I found on the FutureProducers.com forums that tells you how to do what you want (I think):

quote:
Put a pad on channel 1 and a kick on channel 2. Next create a group channel and insert " Waves C1 comp-sc" Then on the bottom of the pad's channel route the output to the Group channel so the full signal is passed to the group.

Then on the kick channel open up you send rack and click like your going to add a FX so the menu pops up and choose Group 01 (default name) and turn up the send level. ( This is only to trigger the compression so you should still hear the kick as normal after the next step because the main output of the kicks channel still goes to the regular bus1)

Now, pull up the C1 and set the key mode to "L -> R" and adjust the compression ratio and threshold until you start to hear the pad dip down when the kick hits.

Last thing you gottta do is get the pad centered. I've been using a plug that comes with wavelab called ToolsOne and using the "MS Process" algorithm to transform the stereo signal so that it resembles a signal recorded according to the M-S (middle/side) principle. If you dont already have ToolsOne I'm sure you could find a free plug that does the same thing if you search around.
