Hello! Looking at going to Australia

Okay I'll keep this to the point.

- I finish Uni soon.

- I was gonna go Australia for a bit, staying with family friends.

- This situation has gona south a bit since they are having problems, but I still really wanna get out of the UK.

So...

Working over summer I intend to go over sometime in October, when flights are cheaper. My questions:

- What are living costs like?

- How easy is it to find casual work?

- I need to buy a laptop to work on/produce/keep in touch with home peoples, what kinda prices do you pay for electronics over there?

- Should I buy a book of deathy spiders and memorize the descriptions incase i get bitten on the shitter?

Thanks guys,

Throw whatever info you want my way. Cheers!

I just got off the phone with the Prime Minister. He says you're not welcome here and wanted me to ask for your real name so immigration can turn you around at the gate. Please supply.

Thanks.

- Living costs are generally pretty good. Cheaper than England, but then again...you won't be earning the pound so it's all relative.

- Finding work is not overly easy currently, casual will probably be alright though. Check with aus embassy to see how work visa's are going at the moment.

- If you want to buy a laptop, I'd say get it duty free on the way in. We're not overly expensive but duty free will be cheaper. For comparisons sake, find the laptop you want then put the model in to www.staticice.com.au and that will give you an indication in aus dollars of how much you would pay. (xe.com/ucc - to convert btw)

- the deadly spiders aren't particularly common so i wouldn't bother so much.

if you're getting a mac (which you should) do NOT get it here... apple has a 15% increase on every apple item sold in australia!

otherwise i reckon you'd be fine, as was mentioned, if you're working here you're earning the aus dollar, so surely living expenses would even out...?

and there's always jobs.. just depends what you want to do

What part of Australia do you plan on coming to?

I think Sydney's rents are expensive at the moment and who knows what they will be like in October. My rent has increased about $75 since I moved in in September 2006. But with the pound (if you have saved some money) it shouldn't be a problem for you. You are looking at about $150-200 per person a week (based on sharing a 2 bedroom flat). Of course this price can go down depending on how many people you share with.

I think with your visa, you can work 6 months at one place, then after those 6 months you have to find a new job. I am not Australian, but I am a Permanent Resident. I am an ESL teacher and we get lots of Brits coming over here and if you teach anything over there it will be easy for you to get a job teaching English. I have seen so many people come and go. Starting pay is about $30 an hour, but you only get 4 hour days.

What kinds of skills do you have? Fruit picking is very popular with travellers.

As for buying a laptop, I have no idea. I buy my electronics when I go home to the US for a visit.

Ha ha. Spider monkey.

Well my degree is in Business Information Technology, so skills wise:

- Database Management
- Networking
- Spreadsheets
- Web Design
- Programming
- Project Management

I worked for a year in commercial development at my students union (mainly involved running a small supermarket along side my manager)

I also have a personal license (for retail of alcohol in the U.K.) and I've worked in loads of retail/bar environments, so I am no stranger to 12 hour shifts.

Honestly I am just after something simple, pays the bills whilst I can relax for a bit and enjoy your country, maybe learn some new things.

Just escape before I jump into the big wide world.

Thanks for your replies so far.

How much is food/utility bills, etc?

Can't help you with he IT skills, but I can tell you if you want to serve alcohol in NSW you need to take a class. I think it can be done in one day. I think it is called RSA or something like that.

Best of luck to you.
