Effects ...

I have a djm-500, and I've learned to use some of the effects, but the life of me, cannot understand exactly when to place them. Especially the Reverb, and Delay.. what are they used for, and when should I incorporate them into my mixes. Flanger and Echo are rather easy, and I guess autopan is just a fun thing to do really .. Any explanation would be great.

Now are the other effects processor I could hook up to my mixer, even though I have effects already, that might be beneficial and fun for me ?? And effects processors, how many effects do they generally come w/ ?

confused ... thanks for your help ahead of time ...

I tend to avoid using effects all together unless it is a well placed Filter or Flanger effect. Pan can do some cool stuff. But all in all, to me, effects really can get cheesy. I don't mess with delay or reverb at all, too much trouble to just end up sounding like crap anyways. I never bothered to even learn its functions or purpose.

There really isn't a right or wrong time to use them, just when you think or feel that at a particular moment, this type of effect would be cool here. Just like trancinchink said, be creative

naw your suppose to use it 1:17 mins into a record....hehe.

yeah I just started experimenting with some effects, I have a Korg kaoss mixer so I have tons of them....it takes time and lots of recordings.

when you are testing them out definitely record it and listen later to tell if it is cool.

is it a bad/good idea , if I already have several effects, to go out and get an effects processor ... personally I like the sounds of effects, it makes dj'ing fun ... with a effects processor outside my mixer, how many effects do they come equipped with ??

some effects processors can have tons of effects.. in general, using effects with techno, jungle and drum & bass are more effective than trance. the styles just seem.. more receptive i guess you could say. if you use effects too much in trance it can get overwhelming, and as Dirk W said, sometimes it sounds really cheesy. with techno/jungle/drum&bass, effects really add to the tracks and the mix as a whole (imo at least)

plus effects are fun to screw around with

don't turn your back on the delay!!! if you work enough with it you can get immense results.

try setting it to half a beat with the depth about 2/3 up, play with the mix knob in time, as in: in half beats, as if to cut from wet to dry signal.... it will sound shit when you get it wrong, but when you get it right it sounds mint and you will be chuffed that you can do things that eddie halliwell does

there is loads of other things you can do with the delay, its just a matter of having the patience to work it out.

but yeah, effects on trance.. bleh. effects on hard stuff, breaks, techno and other stuff such like.. yay!

i abuse the delay like hell... just experiment and you'll find uses for it.
esp with tracks with broken beats (breaks/dnb)

Hey

Most of the time I use echo its when the kick and bass are blowing up. I put it around 440 on my Pioneer DJM 500. Then I make the volume go up or down depending on what part of the song is playing. I hope this helps

wet = 100& effect and dry = no effect.. looking at the djm500 there isnt a specific mix knob.. so my best guess is to play with the the parameter min > max knob, then set the time to somewhere around 200 using the little auto bpm button thingys.. 1 beat is usually around 400 ish depending on how fast you are playing

but yeah theres tons of interesting stuff to do with the delay, you just got to play around loads to find it
