Well I think that the better ways to get nice string sounds are with samples and/or sample based synths, rather than VAs.
Atmosphere is quite nice, as is Edirol HQ Orchestral. These are the two I use for string sounds. This is not to say that you can't get a decent string out of other stuff, just what I use and they work quite well.

Don't bother trying to get a real world string with an OSC based VSTi.. it won't happen..
I would recommend Edirol Orchestral over Atmosphere.. the strings in atmosphere aren't very bright and don't trill at all..
but if you want the full-on treatment.. get a Vienna Symphonic Library DVD set.. but I hope you have at least $1500 to blow if u want that
for synth style strings try Synth 1 or Superwave P8, there are many presets for synth 1 on www.kvr-vst.com.
What I usually do is use a simple string noise from Synth1 and add lots and lots of fx to it, then have superwave play the same string line with a filter slowly coming off. It gives a great uplifting effect
