could you producers out there help a new boy, please

i am new to production and have just started to use REASON, i have found my way round to sequencer and got a few loops going with the REDRUM.

i've been using Tiesto's Traffic as a template to help me.

the first 16 (i think) bars sound pretty much similar to mine (thin), but hve that BANG! its a total different tune.

how the hell do you make your KICK sound like this??

does he put a second kick over the top or is it soething to do with the BASSLINE that comes in.

please help, because when i can't get the basic kick and bass sounding right it deters me from going any further!!

a .rns file would be nice to help me allong.

not sure, but to me it sounds like he has a reversed kick going with the kick

Well at the begining is that really muddy kick with hardly any low end right?
Then a deeper kick comes in later whilst the other one is still there, so yeah it is a combo of two kicks. I guess with some compression too.
Hey Guys am I anumed to what a punchy kick sounds like because I make my own kicks now and this kick in traffic aint what id call 'Full'

Taking traffic as an example song to start with is bad news

There is a reversed kick in play there btw.

can anyone give me a good place to start??

all the kicks i find on the net don't have the same PUNCH as the ones in released produtions.

Sample the kick, listen to it, you'll see it's actually not as complicated as it seems. Then just EQ the living sjiet out of a couple of kick samples At least that's how a newbie like me does it.

Just take a normal 909 kick put a compressor between redrum kick channel and mixer, also a distortion and a eq to rol off low end enable the eq on the mixer and cut the Hi almost al the way down. Now play with the compressor to get a sound you like.

Along with layering of kicks, alot of these tracks are professionally mixed and mastered using expensive current and vintage outboard processors. You're not going to duplicate a sound like that from Reason coming straight off a computer.

I seriously feel like I'm saying the same things over and over again in every thread, but here we go again...

Final mixing and mastering can only do so much to improve the tune. If the tune sounds flat and dull before mastering it will sound flat and dull after it too. You have to have the foundations right even before the mastering, it can't turn shit to diamonds.

Yeah thats in-denial bollocks, something we may have all used to pursade ourselfs its not our fault. But you can get things sounding EXTREMELY close to proffesional in any sequencer used around here. I bet The entire Traffic could have been made in fruityloops.
