Getting people into trance

OK, I've got a friend who I'd like to get into trance, she's got a pretty wide taste already and likes some dance music I think. Question is, how do I try and get her into trance?

I don't wanna scare her off by playing 3/4 hour sets with 9 minute long songs coz at first 'newcomers' probably think it's boring and repetitive (which at first for them it probably is!). So do you think my best bet is with Trance Nation compilation CDs with about 20 songs on each disk or so?

The thing is, I was weened on by at least 5 years of Ibiza chillout/trance nation CDs that my mum continually played. It was only till last year when I looked up on the internet trance music and came across the real stuff that I appreciated it. Is there a way to speed up this process? Any ideas? Thanks.

In this situation, melodic radio edits are your best friend.

... but that's just what I would do.

Just play some chillin singles...
nothing too long.

usually some popular dj's like PvD, Armin, and tiesto...
whoever else, but I have gotten quite a few people into trance and for me the best way to do it was by playing short 4-6min singles and moving on to the next kick ass song.

Start with the most easily accessible stuff (cheese) and then slowly start working the way in to the good stuff.

Cool

Vocals, vocals, and more vocals. If marijuana is a gateway drug into harder drugs... then cheese is the gateway into quality trance. (not saying all vocal tracks are cheesy though).

i couldnt agree more, vocals are key, girls like to sing along to tracks, especially female vocals, and in my experience it doesnt have to be cheese. remixes of sarah mclachlan, motorcycle, andain, jan johnston, that aren't overbearing (repetition-wise) work well in getting girls into trance. once they realize how good the melodies and chord progressions are unto themselves (without vocals), they are hooked.

OK, thanks for that, I've got 'Trance Nation Anthems' which is essentially mostly good trance songs that are about four minutes long - the tracklist of CD1 is:

Disc: 1
1. Barbers Adagio For Strings - William Orbit (Ferry Corsten Remix)
2. Out Of The Blue - System F
3. 9PM (Till I Come) - ATB (Sequential One 1999 Remix)
4. 1999 - Binary Finary (Gouryella Remix)
5. Universal Nation - Push
6. Liberation (Fly Like An Angel) - Matt Darey's Mash Up feat Marcella Woods
7. The World 99 - Pulp Victim
8. Revelation - Electrique Boutique
9. Silence - Delerium feat Sarah McLachlan (DJ Tiesto In Search Of Sunrise Remix)
10. 7 Cities - Solar Stone (Solar Stone's Atlantis Remix)
11. Secret Wish - Boccaccio Life (Lange Remix)
12. Reincarnations - Steve Morley
13. Gamemaster - Lost Tribe (Lost Tribe's 99 Remix)
14. Angel - Ralph Fridge
15. Bulgarian - Travel (Signum Remix)
16. L'esperanza - Airscape

Do you think this would be worth giving to her? Alternatively I was thinking about 'Dance Anthems' (for those of you not in the UK basically a radio show every Sunday night for 2 hours - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/a...n_anthems_link1) or perhaps a CD compilation with a bit more commerical cheese.

Any further ideas? Thanks guys.

NO CHEESE!

Everybody's got access to cheese. Show the stuff she wouldn't usually have the chance to listen. Show her something different.

Be sure to show all different kinds of trance, from epic stuff to the acid madness. Don't let it become monotonous.

Be different.

Be original.

Be gentle.

Be the lover she's never had.

Show her how much you care.
