Melody or Design?

Im quite keen to find out what different people's methods are when it comes to production, which is always your main basis to a new track? The Sound design first or the melody first?

Thanks All

Melody and structure first, everything else comes later.

Ive tried thinking about that when i first started and realized i kept debating over n over what sound i need and this and that and in the end , ended up with shit since i was about the sound design. Now its melody, structure, bass.

ALso for me If i start out with the beat and percs, i always end up with a prog song heh.

Yeah, i usually start out with the kick, bass & perc. Then get the melody down and maybe reshuffle and tweak around that...

I have no special list I check as I progress when I make music. Sometimes I make some groovy drums, sometimes I make a melody, sometimes just a feeling...

I usually start with the klimax or the break.

If I start with the klimax, I first make a drum-pattern, a bass-pattern and then make a melody around the bass.

If I start with the break I make a Pad-pattern and then I make a melody around that pattern. Works fine to me.

I've never learned how to do music production properly and thats probably why I'm crap at it.

I get a riff / melody and record that first - either chords or the lead then fill in with basslines and generic kick / hi hat to get the basic rhythm going then fill it out from there replacing the generic kick and hi hat with something less boring.

I also save my files as different names every so often too just in case I want to go back to a previous version.

R.
