8th notes or 16th notes?

I think you mean whole notes, half notes or quarter notes

trance is usually at 140 bpm

that would mean (roughly) about 2 beats per second. an eigth or 16th note would be 1/8 or 1/16 of each beat... translating to about 16 notes to 32 notes per second... pretty crazy unless you are talking in terms of happy hardcore

look at midi's of your favourite tunes, they will tell you roughly what note length to use.

hmmm
ya i meant 1/8th of a bar or a half note..i tried workign with half or quarter notes...i've tried a mixture...but with the delay and reverb it gets into mush..you don't hear the rhythm to the song...flanging it makes it even worse...do you guys just use halfs and delay a little bit? i noticed gating more makes it more...rhythmy...?

Not fixed size because then the melody sounds too primitive.
Try play piano - all notes same size = blood in ears

Fixed size = arps and bassline for me (maybe).
