I almost thought for a second you were suggesting that people don't look down on others for enjoying listening to music that is popular.

But you aren't saying that...right?

People accuse others of hating on things when they make criticisms of songs that are popular even if they have legitimate reason to dislike it?

No, what you're saying is that when someone claims they "hate" a track, people will ignorantly accuse them of only disliking it because it's popular. I agree that this is a stupid assumption to make, and the most likely reason for the person disliking the track is because it's not to their taste or is just objectively poor.

However, the way you worded it so bluntly, it was almost like you were implying that the elitism whined about by fans of commercial tracks is non-existent, and it certainly isn't. I would agree that it's too easy a comeback to say "you only hate it cos it's popular", but I believe some people really do voice their dislike for some tracks just to place themselves on a moral/intellectual high-ground.

It does actually happen quite a lot around here, so let's not pretend it doesn't.

It's a popular theory among internet debators that if you can trivialize your opponent's argument through an unrelated insult and/or other debasement, it invalidates the first person's argument.

Example:

"That track just doesn't reach a climax."

"Your mom just doesn't reach a climax."

The best idea is to just ignore those people. They probably just like the track because it's popular.
