No, you don't have pay to play, you have to buy the game which is about 30 to 40 $ depending on where you buy it. Then all you need is an internet connection. I recommend boardband because if you have dial-up you will most likely lag in the game and piss people off.

Well I can't really say for sure anymore becuase I haven't been playing ladder in a long time now. I play alot of custom games like hero arena and DOTA. I must say I own at them too. When I was playing ladder I was lvl 10 solo and lvl 12 AT but that was a long time ago, I am much better now. I guess I have to play some ladder games to see where I stand.
