DJ's have no skill.. deal with it :P I can play songs and match there BPMs too...

this is my opinion but I would honestly love to be proven wrong.. feel free

my opinion excludes scratch artists A.K.A. Turntablism, they are not worthy of having the same name as people who make "DJ Sets" - I believe the term Scrath Artists better suits them :P

Listen to some good techno djs then. they will prove you wrong. Trance mixing is basic, you're right, my cat can do it.

i mean mixing records, but I've seen some use drum machines as well as decks, using three decks and having them all going at once, cutting back and fourth between each, layering up percussion and stuff, i.e. not just using the djm flanger to make everything sound cool.

oh yeh.. I could see live DJing as being hard (meaning mixing on the spot with the drum machines and turntables and stuff) but I'm talking just mixing 10 songs together on your computer to make a "set".. like the thousands you can download in that forum..

Yes, mixing in your basement requires no real skill and only a little practice. DJ'ing for an actual crowd in a less controlled environment does require some skill though, especially if you're doing stuff like the techno DJs that cheggy mentions (ie. layering 2-3 songs, using the effects on external processors or the mixer, etc). Reading the crowd and playing accordingly requires some skill as well, or at least practice.

You're comparing apples to oranges IMO. The producer has more musical skill, sure, because the DJ is not really a musician, but probably not more dexterity or ability to program a set effectively enough to rock the dancefloor.

Anyways we're way off topic; I have my own webspace so don't need to take you up on this, but thanks for offering!

yeh I guess you're right.. maybe I'm just to "high and mighty" over the fact that I can produce a track and the DJ can only mix it.. hrmm.. trying to think of an anolgoy but can't.. oh well

I suppose as long as DJs (basement mixers) don't consider themselves to be an artist, musician, or producer then I'm happy (not that i've ever heard/seen one do this)
