Laptop DJ'ing

PvD does it, Filo & Peri did it - Laptop DJing (Time encoded vinyl and a laptop setup). I think it could very well be the way of the future.

After a little looking into this it turns out there are a few companies that make these types of rigs:

Stanton Final Scratch - http://www.finalscratch.com/

Serato/Rane Scratch Live - http://www.serato.com/

MixVibes - http://www.mixvibes.com/ (time coded vinyl to be released later this year)

---

There are a number of proprietary hardware ones as well, but to keep this as pure as possible - I just listed the ones that still use turntables and mixers (the old fashioned way).

Has anybody used any of these? Comments?

Yeah RJ, agreed. A more suitable and safer deduction would be that anything involving turntables (of the traditional archetype) are the way of the past.

- During a recent 4 hour set at Fabric, Sasha used nothing but CD-R's, not one single vinyl record in 4 hours.

- PVD using a laptop gear / setup (excuse my lack of technical knowledge about his specific hardware) for over a year now.

(of course decks are still being used prominently in club land, but you can't help but notice the obvious degradation of the record dj)

Also some of the more progressive (and not the music reference) labels are starting "digital" lines - releasing tracks for download.

i.e.

I think products like Final Scratch are great for DJs who take requests during their sets, such as wedding DJs and Radio DJs. This enables them to bring their entire collection on one laptop.

I do not think it will really catch on in clubs due to a simple fact that in order to set it up on the fly in a live environment requires you to somewhat disturb the set of the DJ before and after.

Well that's RJ's point isn't it, at what point will the clubs and their current setup respectively change to accomodate the changing scene... (spearheaded by the pioneers and leaders)

...thus rendering setup time no longer a factor

here is another point. WHO CARES what they use as long as music playes?

DJs use this, DJs use that... so what? if they had to use tape players, so be it! music play, people dance and that's the basic idea.

the technology is amazing. What is scary though is that it just makes it easier for download djs to practice their craft. I think MP3 DJs (who steal music) should be shot. If they are buying music legally thats one thing. But those who download and then make money off of it deserve fines.

Also, ive never seen a site that offers decent music to download legally anyways. Itunes etc offers mainly commercial mainstream junk so unless you are pvd or sasha etc and have the real MP3s you have no excuse to be using them. (unless u are the dj at plastique)

LOL

I'm not trying to start a debate. I'm trying to determine which format I should move into (CDJ or Laptop) and get opinions on which rigs are better, pros, cons, etc.

Ooo! Transposing 100s of records is going to be fun.... lol

I'll still buy vinyl because artists deserve the money (my bro is a recording engineer so i know exactly how the pennies roll downhill).

Hopefully more and more labels will come out w/ digital counterparts so when I do move to a digital system I can avoid the whole shipping/customs/excise problem completely.

I care and a lot of other TA DJs do as well I'm sure...it's nice to know the advances in technology and current trends in any field you are in

I rmember reading an article where Tiesto said that vinyl is great but it's a thing of the past...more classic per se - and it's more difficult carying boxes of vinyls with you all around the world even though he is not saying good bye to them yet. He also said that with the advances to CD Turntables (CDJ) by Pioneer it's now possible to use CD's like turntables which was really a hassle before.
He also mentioned that now he can sit on a plane pull out his laptop, work on a song or a remix, burn it on a CD and play it right on the next gig, while with vinyl it takes a few days to make it and when it comes it might have some physical damage to it.

There are lots of other DJs that use final scratch like John Aquaviva and I think Richie Hawtin as well and many more. I guess PVD is the main man in trance who imbraced it. I like how he has a silver briefcase that he travels with that contains his apple laptop
