Smiley DJ so how long you been doin this dj thing for?

hey folks. i been at this djin' caper for just comin up to a year now and i'm often bemused and curious at what level i've actually gotten myself to after this period of time. i guess im ok but when i go out, i can kinda see the division, or the difference between me and the "professional" dj (for one, they adopt this "beatmatching" style i've failed to achieve ).

so i guess what i wanna know is how long you guys/girls been djin' for? i mean since the very first time you had frequent goes at learning how to beatmix. and maybe as a sub-question, what level do you think you've reached (more in a personal reflection context).

sorry if this seems like im excluding non-djs but im sure those who dont mix are also keen to know how long our resident djs been goin at it? yes?

7 years ... and I'm still shit!

When I'm out n about or on the radio, I don't suck that badly, but bad enough (shutup perth guys!), but as soon as i try to record a mix, whammo, big time crapola.

How so?? Do you mean they beatmatch in a different way to you??? I would have thought there to be only 1 method

well i got into Djing a bit after getting into trance, tbh i dunno what level i have reached. Sometimes it's a good day and the mixing is very good, sometimes it's ordinary stuff. But i think that "sometimes" is due to my equipment but until someone gets the very best equipment there is, they will never know how good or bad they are.

I mean you can't compare yourself to a person who uses a more advance turntable who does less work than the others. Put them all in the same category then you will see a better result.

errr it was a joke. it insinuates that i cant beatmatch, hence the joke.

good points bout the equipment but im talkin bout all things bein equal.. i know theres a latin term for this, i remember from first yr uni - law or something.

and plus psyg, you havent really stated how long? a ball-park figure perhaps?

I lack sense of humour i guess hah

but how can something be equal if it's not equal in the first place. It's like exams, everyone is doing the same thing but someone can easily be disadvantaged and be worse than everyone when they could have had the potential to show their true abilities if it was more fair.

it's too early to be talking in riddles IMO

im sayin, lets just "pretend" everyone is on the same level playing field on everything bar skill/ability. lets ignore the the equipment for a sec.

EDIT: i've strayed from the original purpose of this thread a bit... so how long u been at it?

Theres actually a few 'methods' of beatmatching

You have headphone mixing vs monitor mixing or split cueing
as well as touching the platter vs only using the pitch to adjust speed

All seem like different methods of beatmatching to me anyway

i think its also a case of some people being more gifted and picking it up easier then others, like sports and activities.

also good equipment helps

i can see how thats possible. its like ridiing a bike eh?

just a tad over a year for me i think?
what level? *shrug* i can beatmatch hehe. i ride the pitch?
um. i cant really compare my skills to be honest as i dont go out much..... however, i assume its shit loads easier to mix at a club with the amount of bass, compared to how analytical recording on a computer is. oh, i only recently picked up harmonic mixing just a few months ago. applying the principle is simple given you have some music theory knowledge, its just keying your records that's a bitch. i dont trust those programs either, mixmeister? rapid evolution? they're bout 70% right, so i key them myself. but i'm lazy. eh. excuse my rambling. i'm brain dead from an assessment centre interview

throw us a mix jizza! i'll judge for ya
