Arrogant Paul Martin blames Harris for Ontario tax increases

Paul Martin may have come to Toronto to talk about the waterfront. But there’s little doubt he’ll soon be going from a shore thing to a sure thing – the expected Sunday call of a federal election.

The Prime Minister, while not confirming Ottawa’s worst kept secret about the vote, insists he’s not worried about a potential backlash from the key province of Ontario, after the Grit contingent here raised taxes in the budget, despite a promise not to do so.

And he trotted out what’s becoming an increasingly familiar refrain destined to be heard again and again during the upcoming campaign, designed to placate disgruntled local voters.

“I think it’s pretty clear what happened in Ontario,” he opines. “Mike Harris cut taxes prematurely … He eventually put himself … in a situation where they had to cut services, and they indebted the province. And I think it’s a very strong example of why fiscal prudence is very important when you govern, and you shouldn’t cut taxes unless you can afford them.”

He denies Premier Dalton McGuinty lied to constituents. “I think the voters of Ontario who’ve lived through what they’ve lived through over much of the past decade … understand exactly where the responsibility lies,” he concludes.

If Martin calls the vote as expected this weekend, we’d likely hit the polls on Monday, June 28th.

well hes right. im sorry but whether you vote conservative or liberal he left the province a mess. and dont for a second pretend paul martin is any more arrogant than mike harris. one of the more insincere politicians i have known in my lifetime.

edit.. that said i dont think dalton mcguinty is capable of fixing the situation though.

man... you don't like liberals, we got that message.

I am for one want some changes at the federal level... but there's not a single party that can win this next one. sadly

a minority liberal govt would be intresting.

I'm done debating politics here...you liberal bashers spew propaganda as much as anyone you're criticizing, lol.

It's rather obvious that McGuinty's shitty term is going to affect the federal election. Suddenly, the term "liberal" = liar.

Martin has two choices...distance himself and have the public perceive a fundamental difference of policy and opinion between the federal and provincial liberals, or throw some support behind him and bash the previous conservative governments which may also help him in his election bid by further tarnishing the image of federal conservatives. There's a reason Mike Harris turned down running for the leadership of the federal conservatives...he knows he can't win in ontario (and probably not in Quebec either), which means he would fail to win the election unless he virtually swept the entire rest of the country (not going to happen).

malek, I agree...I'd actually LIKE to see a strong minority Liberal gov't, which is what we're likely to get anyway, providing the NDP does well and would work with the Liberals. That would be *really* interesting :P
