what are the stats on your computer? processor, memory, OS etc? what type of soundcard are you using and what program are you using to record your sets?
have you done a sweep for virus, spyware, adware, etc? alot of times these programs run in the backgroud and you cant see them and can take up valuable memory and processor space.

Run taskmanager and kill all the uneeded/unwanted programs, they hog both your memory and your processor time. In fact, I would completely disconnect you computer from the network, so there won't be any bogging down there.
Hope this helps.

If you are using Cool Edit Pro 2.X that might be a problem. Switch it to SoundForge, and hear the differencies.
