Cubase VST problem

Right..I've just recently tried to get producing with Cubase but one thing keeps annoying the f*** out of me.

I set a VSTi to play a midi part but every time I press the play button the VST reverts back to a random patch. Usually its the most annoying sound that the VSTi is capable of. It'll only produce the right sound after some frantic clicking while the tune plays. But then it reverts back again after I stop!

This seems to happen with every VSTi I've got (except the LM7 drum machine) and on two different machines with two different versions of Cubase SX. So I have a feeling its some kind of setting I've got wrong. Changing midi channels doesn't seem to help either.

Anyone got any ideas?

If it's a midi part you downloaded from somewhere, there's a big chance there's a program change right at the beginning of the part. Easiest way to get rid of it is to select the part and open the list editor. Filter everything out except program changes. You should be able to find it pretty quickly then, just delete it.

Well...if you've tried it with different VSTis, and you've tried it with different versions of Cubase, and you've changed midi channels, what else could possibly be a common factor?

Select the MIDI in the sequencer, MIDI > Logical Presets > Standard set 2 > Remove patch changes

True. Seems obvious to me now but I'm more used to loop based sequencers than full on MIDI stuff. Thanks for the help, that was really holding me back.
