WASHINGTON (CNN) -- CIA Director George Tenet has resigned, citing personal reasons, President Bush said Thursday.

In a statement made at the White House, Bush said that Tenet informed him of his decision Wednesday night.

Bush said Tenet had done "a superb job for the American people."

"He has been a strong and able leader at the agency," Bush said.

"He has been a strong leader in the war on terror and I will miss him."

Tenet will leave the position in mid-July Bush said.

Tenet was sworn in as the Director of Central Intelligence on July 11, 1997.

I think it's a little unfair that Tenet's taking the fall for Bush when his organisation did warn him about the questionable quality of some of the intelligence used in the SOTU and other addresses, but you would hardly say that the CIA's performance over the past 3-4 years has been "glowing". Wonder who they're going to replace him with? Is it a government appointed post?

No joke. My original opinion was that he needed to resign after 9-11. I understand why Bush "couldn't" fire him as it would make him appear to be scapegoating, but I would have wished he had then.

I feel the same way regarding Coni Rice.

Are you sure that occupation is president-appointed? Didn't Tenet serve under Clinton's administration?

Yes he did, and Bush thought he was doing a good job at the time so he asked him to stay.

Temporarily, it will be Tenet's deputy, John McLaughlin, a career CIA man, who'll be in charge. I guess they will announce an official CIA chief later on...

Yes, he was appointed by Clinton in '97. The CIA is not political office like the executive cabinet. Although lately the office of director of the CIA has fallen victim to politicizing.

FYI. In the 6yrs. prior to Tenet the CIA had 4 different directors.
