ASF (Windows Media 9 format) to DiVX problem
Hey all, I got a little problem with ASF files. I already used the search and couldn't find any proper match in here, so i'm sorry if this has been discussed before.
Here's the thing:
I recently got a video file that's encoded on WMV9 into an ASF file (although I might just as well change the extension to any video format and it will play just fine), and I wanted to convert it to divx format.
I've looked everywhere for tutorials, and though i've found some very detailed ones, none seems to cover the errors i've come across.
For starters, the file can be played just perfectly on WMP, the only problem is that I cannot move along the file since its flags apparently has it on "live mode" or something like that which doesn't make it seekable. So, I wanted to wanted to convert it to divx to make it a lot easier to handle and playable on more places, since the WMV9 is very much a pain in the ass.
So here's my journey. First, I tried to use TMGPEnc, but it won't let me open it, giving me an error message that says "file c:\blahblahblah.asf can not open, or unsupported". Then I tried VirtualDub 1.3c, but it won't open as well giving me an error that says "ASF: Parse Error -- too many segments in packet at e48 (47 expected) packet size = 169b, send time 20:11:38:51".
I kept looking on and found this program called AsfTools which is supposed to be capable to convert it to AVI, so i tried it and converted the ASF to AVI, but at the time I tried to open the AVI file, this won't have any video on it. The first time I tried to play it, WMP said it needed a codec, so it downloaded the needed codec, installed it but the file still wouldn't have any video. Same happens on winamp, no video at all.
After this I tried yet another program, called River Past Video Cleaner, which supposedly can convert a lot of files to different formats, but I got the same results again. This time the program will simply hang in there forever (awaiting for the video input I suppose) and it won't do anything, except it will have this counter for how much the process is taking ... but there's no work at all being done.
Also, I found this other program called GraphEdit (which looks very promising) which could also do the trick, but I got errors in here too. The program would give me two errors, one that says that the buffer is not big enough (I ignore what buffer it is refering to), and the other that says "Catastrophic Error (0x8000FFFF)" and it won't do anything else.
Soooooooooooooo, I made yet another search and found even yet another program, this time from Microsoft, called Windows Media Encoder. I got this program by suggestion from someone on one of the articles I found, which consisted on re-encoding the program to WMV9 again, but this wouldn't work either. At the time the encoding starts, a message will popup saying the same "catastrophic error" I got on GraphEdit, which in part makes me suppose I got something fucked up in my computer ... but again, it wouldn't work.
I know this looks like a dead end, but does anyone's got any ideas?
If it's of any help the file won't open in winamp directly (the original ASF file), it will only open on Windows Media Player but it's not seekable.
On WMP the file information says it's encoded in WMV9, that i'm also assuming it could be the root of all these problems, or at least it has something to do with it.
Any bit of help will be very appreciated! Thanks in advance.
