Looking for suggestions, Pioneer CDJ800 vs. CDJ1000...

Hi,

I'm giving some consideration to investing in a CDJ in the next few months, and I would most likely be buying either the Pioneer CDJ800 or the 1000MKII model. There is a fairly significant difference in pricing, and the feature lists are quite similar.

The unit would be used for bedroom purposes, and I've been looking at purchasing one for the purpose of both familiarizing myself with spinning on one, as well as using it to play downloaded tracks. Oh, and when I say download, I mean a combination of amateur unreleased tracks and things like the new Anjuna digital download service.

I'm assuming that the CDJ800 would be acceptable for my purposes?

The 800 is very good, has a beat cutter and pretty much the same options as the 800. I would stay away from any player thats not made by pioneer.

Hey Kibon, it's me Chroma from afterhours! I spin on the 800s bro, and they're top-notch. Very easy to handle and very effective. The features on the CDJ1000s do not make up for the extra 300 dollars you need to pay. From having the 800s for almost a year now, the only real thing I envy from the 1000s is that .02% pitch increment, compared to the .05% on the 800s. Making the 1000s a bit more accurate. There are times on the 800 where you can get 2 tracks beatmatched perfectly, but if you let them play for say 1 minute together or more, it will SLOWLY start to go out of beat. A short and quick tap to the jog wheel brings it back to perfect beatmatch for another minute or 2. That of course is because of the 0.05, most tracks however do match to 0.05%, and you can let them play forever beatmatched. With the 1000s you might still have this problem, but to a lesser degree. Not really worth an extra 300 bucks I think. Other features on the 1000s include the Waveform display, which isn't very impressive even. If you know your tracks and know your phrases, you shouldn't need them. The other thing is the extra cue points you can save onto a card. But is this really necessary?

If I shat dollar bills every day on the toilet, I would've gotten the 1000s, and mainly because of the 0.02, and the spiffy black color and silver wheel border. But since I don't crap out money, I'm very satisfied with the 800s.

Thanks Chroma (and the others that responded as well), you've pretty much confirmed my suspicions that the differences between the two models isn't really enough to justify the price. I would probably only buy one of them to start with, as an addition to the two Technics turntables I'm currently running.

I'm a University student right now, so I'm not exactly pooping money either, hehe.

The current copy of iDJ has a pretty extensive list of record labels that are starting to dip their toes into the waters of offering direct digital downloads of tracks. It's quite an attractive supplement to vinyl, particularly considering that the tracks are usually only $2 or so each, compared to the $17CND that I currently spend per track.

Definately another option, however I'm generally getting the sense that the Pioneers are much closer to being industry standard, if they aren't already there.

Plus the Pioneers are just dead seksy.

It was the cdj800 vs dns3000, its hard to tell but i think the 3000 may have came out on top, but the two are so close that anybody deciding between the two would probably be happy with either one.

Full disclosure – I own the CDJ1000MK2s and have never used the CDJ800s…

I think the $300 is justified but it all depends if that is a lot of money to you. If you make 100K and year don’t skimp, but if you are charging them on a credit card then maybe you should.

Being able to see the WAV file and the better accuracy in the +6/-6 pitch range is a big deal in my opinion. There are a lot of times where I find myself wishing they would go down to .01%. Also the top end of a line usually has better resell should you want to dump them on eBay.

Thanks,
Keith

If your CD collection is extensive...

The SD storage on the 1000s is very attractive. I don't use CDs so much to play entire tracks as I do to loop intros, outros, and sample.

I also much prefer the metal (1000) vs. rubber (800) buttons, the brighter display, and the reverse switch (1000) vs button (800).

Having said this, I do not own either, though if I were to purchase one today it would be the 1000s, solely on the strength of SD storage, finer pitch adjustment, and waveform display.

What I'm really waiting for is something like the DMP555 in a CDJ700 (cdj500s for non-US market) form factor. That would be sweet. We'll see what's in the pipeline...

Cheers...
