Sad are there too many DJ's already?

I'd like to become a DJ in the near future but I'm worried about the general demand for DJ's these days, I've even heard the sarcastic comment that "every other college kid is a 'DJ' nowadays.

On the other hand I know that many clubs/companies are offering contracts.

What do you think? Are there too many DJ's already? (In particular, if you're from the USA I really wanna hear your point of view about the local scene.)

I will give you this advice:

a) If your going to do it, put your heart and soul into it, be dedicated. Realize your going to have to spend years and thousands of dollars in order to make things work out for yourself.

b) Don't worry about DJ quantity, its all about QUALITY.

Very well said. Right now DJ'ing is at the height of its popularity. Just like when you watch a movie about martial arts etc. etc. It makes you wanna be all tough and some people really do get inspired and start up [you can fill in martial arts for anything] but the people only keep to it while it's "cool". The thing is... right now DJ'ing is "COOL" so everyone wants to do it. Everytime I do a set I have people come up and start asking me how much everything costs, how much I practice, blah blah; because they want to get started and I just laugh. I was fortunate enough to have a friend that started before me and told me about the "REAL" committment that DJ'ing requires [like no other committment] and I was ready for it... I didn't become a DJ to be cool. I became a DJ to share my love and passion for music.

I became a DJ because i love the music.. i make almost no money from it (at least not enough to cover all the cash the equipment cost me), but i still do it.. I know i'm better than all the other DJ's in my area, so i think there are too many "DJ's", but there are almost no good DJ's..

too many DJs...

The way I see it there are 2 types of DJs those that play at highschool dances, weddings, and stuff like that. I photograph alot of these events and boy do the most of the DJs suck. I saw one go from alice deejay - better off alone to dmx. Anyone can throw on two cds and hit stop and play. Now the other type of DJ is the one I pay to go see, The ones I run to after I have had to listen to theses guys a the High school dances. The GOOD DJs. Those that can take 2 different songs and make one out of them. The ones that no how to read a crowd, and can control them. I personaly don't spin, I have no real desire or talent to. I have friends that are just starting out who more or less just beat match and fade the next track in. I also have friends who have been doing it for years, and the fiddle with all kinds of "blinky knobs and turny lights" No matter how many times I see it, I'm aw struck. I've have a friend that when ever he rides in my car he mixes on my dash, no matter what I put in, he knows.... He knows the exact moment something is going to happen, and he mimics it. I've had to ask him to stop because I spend more time watching him than I do the road. When we do house parties we usually have like 8 DJs (all friends) or so each spinnin for an hour or so. I don't know how many time I've seen on DJ give up his spot and let the other guy just keep going because hes on such a roll. Well I've just started rambleing now so I'm gonna end it. There can never be too many good DJs. : )

As for the clubs offering contracts I know this from first hand experience.

My best friends uncle has been a dj for 30+ years he has residency at The Complex in providence, rhode island he usually djs the disco and top 40 rooms because thats what hes been doing all his life. besides him the only other people that dj there are between the ages of 18-20ys old and to be honest they all suck. sometimes i go with my friend and his uncle and we help him bring his vinyl in, help him set up etc.... and i started talking to the owner of the club, he said that he gets demo tapes from different kids just about everyweek and they all suck

so it is definetly the quantity not the quality of most djs around today
