Humm, depends on who said it and why but I guess it would mean lack of low-end or punch.

my guess on this would be a kick thats very light, and lacks the things that Nick said. an example of what i think you mean can be found on Oceanlab - Satellite. on the part where justines solo comes in with the lyrics "my love is like foot steps in the snow, baby, i follow you everywhere you go, baby...etc" that sounds liek a hollow kick to me.

to do that (in reason) you can either put the kick through the NN-19 and use the frequency fader inbuilt on it to cut out some of the frequency, or you can load the kick into redrum and put attach a filter to the kick and filter out some of the frequencies.

this seems to work for me. but im only a noob at this as well, so im just telling u what i have learnt hope it helps.

yeah that ... a kick usually starts off with a click which is in the 4khz range then quickly pitches down to 100hz for the woompha at the end. So you can cut out the click or even the whoompha with a filter

well this is the part i dont' understand..i get that i don't have a strong enough kick a lot or that it's sharp/hollow...and i was wondering...do you boost low ends on the parametric eq to get that punch? i'm also not sure if people like the hear the sound of the kick throughout the song (that is it's not muffled and you can hear the actual kick sound) or just to feel the kick (like the beat/rhythm)

its fairly standard to layer two or three kicks together at the moments then break em down to create different dynamics. Try mucking about with a sub kick, a clicky kick and good old 909 type midrange kick
