iam suprised audiogalaxy hasn't been shut down yet. everyone was moaning on about napster and its file sharing, it was all over the internet, newspapers and...well...everywhere! but no-one ever talks about audiogalaxy, the record companies seem fine about it. you can dl any song off it just like you can with Napster and the record companies surely know about his site if we do....

Maybe because AG blocks certain artists with out record companies telling them to do so. Or maybe the record companies have realized that they'll never be able to sop it...I dunno.

Don't quote me on this but I think it's something to do with the way the search is handled, and the fact that there is no central server to be shut down.

With Napster, you would type into the software what track you wanted, and it would then communicate with the Napster server. The Napster server would then search amongst all the users and tell your software of any matches it found. So the Napster servers were helping you find copyright material (even though they didn't actually store the material). So the record companies are like "hold on, you can't help them share our lovely tunes". A bit like if I was keep a list of drug dealers, then walk you round London telling you who you could score off.

With Audiogalaxy, you pop onto the site and type in the track. They check to see if they have a copy on their servers. If it's copyrighted they wont have it. From then on, the satalite does all the work from your machine. They don't have any central servers digging around for tracks on your behalf. A bit like if you were to ask me for drugs and I give you a map of London and tell you to ask around on the streets.

Still a bit of a dodgy area, but it's going to be harder for record companies to stop because Audiogalaxy can't do anything to prevent you searching for copyrighted tracks.

Anyway I don't know that for a fact, I'm just assuming that that's the reasoning behind it. Though I'm pretty sure some other loophole will pop up and the record companies will get their way.

I don't really know, haven't heard anyhting about AG legal trouble yet, maybe they got some better lawyers or something, I havent been on AG since I found a few good IRC channels, those people on IRC have everything. I found one guy with PvD's 1993 essential mix on mp3, didnt get to dl it from him though.

ok...there isnt a point to shutting AG down. Anyway, i present to you a formula:

y= x+5

defining the variables:

y= amount of new music dl services
x= amount of services shut down

or in other words...you shut someting down (eg napster), many others will popup. which translates into file sharing will never stop. in fact, the government is pretty clever not to shut ag down. just my two cents

Metaliica and the stupid fucks over at RIAA decided to shut down Napster and look at what happened! Now you have your choice of Audiogalaxy, MusicCity Morpheus, KaZaa, iMEsh, LimeWire, BearShare, and WinMX not to mention other file sharing programs such as IRC, CuteFTP, and Gnotella.

You can't stop the movement, you can only TRY to contain it.

The weird is that Napster had no banners at all, while Audiogalaxy has
so the MAKE MONEY from other artists... And now with Audiogalaxy Gold even more money... Something doesn't smell right here...

I thought it had something to do with the fact it is web based, and the satalite only connects directly to the person you are downloading from, so as spad said there is not communication, there is nothing to shut down.

One way we thought about getting around the problem was just to let people download a program which searches directly and doesnt use any other server, so u are only connecting directly to other people, so there is nothing to shut down.

Actually i am not really sure, but all i know is i hope ag dont shut down. And as many others said, new ones will b available anyway, and even if they werent look how many files are shared on here,and it isnt hard for a novice to set up file sharing through a server and a direct link. And that many ta put up there ftp info, se we can search there files and download what we want, that is the basics of it.

It was on efnet, I forgot the channel, and the guy's server was too busy for me to get the song, but it was there. I hate that I don't have the name of the channel, efnet is so darn big, I might not find it again. I usually get all my music on #mp3z-techno-dance on dal net though, their file servers aren't as busy over there.

You're absolutely right about this m8! Because AG doesn't have a central server they cannot be shut down, and the same goes with WinMX. This is according to a norwegian expert on internet law, and I think he knows what he's talking about!
