actually to be honest i dont know how it does it's compressing but i've been able to copy all the dvds in my collection that i have tried. Some of them are long with extra features and it all copies fine and plays great. so 2 layer dvds can be copied to a one layer.

heh weird huh. i use DVD X Copy, it is a program that got pulled from the market a few months back. Suppostedly people were buying this program to copy movies from rental places and just about everywhere else. i bought mine well before i knew it could do that. i havent tried copying rental dvds though so i couldn't tell you if it works or not. (i dont rent)
i believe that program broke the dmca regulations signed by clinton.

I haven't logged in for 2 years, but I did just for you.
I just bought a dual layer burner and have recently figured everything out.
One resource on the web has all of the information you need (step by step instructions).
Check out http://www.doom9.org and look under "Guides."
If you have ?s after reading it, let me know.
BTW, I do rental DVDs (8.5GB) to DVD-R (4.38GB) but stripping the extras, promos, previews and I don't lose video quality because I don't compress.
Try DVD Shrink (to see how large the extra audio files are), DVD Stripper (remove extra menus/previews/FBI warnings), DVD Decrypter (rip inside of DVD stripper), DVD Shrink again (remove extra audio from DVD Stripper output), and Nero 6 (burns nicely). That's what work the best for me (in that order).
Good luck.
