buy or lease?

well it's about that time for me to get a car (finally). i was waiting for this mess to clear up (had another car in my name that an ex still had). so now that the title is out of my name, i can go finance a car.

i dont know if i should buy or lease. i know that a lot of ppl think leasing is dumb, but i sort of like the idea of trading it in for a new one every few years. i always get tired of things easily anyway.

the problem though is that my credit is poor. i have some outstanding credit card bills that equal to about 3k all together. that's really not that much debt compared to the average american. but to me, that's sort of a lot and i can't just pay that off right now. so i'm WAY behind on payments. but i've never had a car repod or anything major like that. i had my heart set on a used VW jetta (like a 2000 or 2001). they go for like 10k now. my payments would probably be around $225-250. i'm not gonna put much down (like $500 probably). am i selling myself short? should i just go to a big dealership and see if they can put me in something brand new? like a nissan or honda accord or something? i know once they look at my credit, i'll have a high interest rate. like 13% or something.

any advice would be greatly appreciated, i don't wanna get ripped off.

never lease. Anything.

PS my sister thought the same thing as you even though i said hell no and was so friggin pissed when she went to trade in. She got reamed. windshield nicks, scratches in paint, anything that isnt PERFECT in the car gets money money money money. They made her spend like 2000 dollars before theyd accept it in to get everything fixed.

edit:

You can either get a 2004 and figure out the best warranty for price/time. I loved my 7 year anything goes warranty. I used it for EVERYTHING. plus they washed my car every time I took it in and vacuumed it.

OR you can save some cash and get an 03 or 04 that someone just bought and then ran into issues in life and get it under warranty still and for cheap.

Unless you are an excellent negotiator. I got 7 grand taken off the tag price, and if you dont think you can do that, Id say buy private. Youll save loads.

and never buy a VW, especially if you're on a tight budget. The repair costs will rape you.

If I could lease, I'd do it...I just drive WAY too much. Everything being under the warranty is what's best about leasing. I just paid $400 to get my power window motor fixed on the hot rod last month. That was $10 more than my monthly payment.

also you'd have to pay a shit load in insurance the whole time you have it because the leasing company is gonna make you get excellent coverage on the car..

I’ve never really had to test my negotiating skills out, so I'll see. I DO know that I won’t be pressured into buying something I don’t want or can’t afford, so that’s good. I know what I can afford, and that’s that.

Which make would you recommend? I just got told by a co worker that Acura and Nissan are good cars. The jettas are so cute though!

this is why leasing a car doesn't make sense...

you make a payment every month that is probably close to or more than a regular car payment and at the end of the 2-3 years...you don't own anything. if you had bought a regular car, at least you would have gained the resale value of the car towards your next car, but with a lease...your trade in isn't worth anything.

Saab's are cute...very feminine cars.

i looked on autotrader.com too, and i'm seeing a lot of 02 and 03 nissan maximas for like 14,900. they have leather and power everything. that's not too bad, those are nice cars...

If you can manage, get ahold of a Toyota Celica or a Camry. They last forever. Mine's been going strong for ten years and looks like it's about four years old at the most.
