That's me in the corner, That's me in the spotlight, I'm Losing my religion, Trying to keep up with you ,And I don't know if I can do it, Oh no, I've said too much,I haven't said enough, I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing, I think I thought I saw you try.
But that was just a dream, That was just a dream, But that was just a dream, Try, cry, why try? That was just a dream ,Just a dream, just a dream, Dream

I think that trance - considering it probably doesn't have the same "underground" following as, say, prog and tech in Melbourne - is actually not doing to badly to have as many nights as it does. I can remember when this forum first started there weren't any regular trance nights in Melbourne at all (with the exception of Steve Strangis' early morning sets at Sugar Suite) and now there's 5AM, Unify, San Tran, Transcend and all the others that I can't think of right now (hope I got all those names right ). Not only are lots of nights, but they're being held in prime venues like Room, whereas the prog and tech nights are struggling to fill up their more infrequent events being held in much smaller venues. Republic got bumped from Room's Saturday nights, Teriyaki had it's first Friday night at Room for like 8-9 months just the other week, and the Sunday prog night at Q-Bar got scrapped due to lack of interest. Now there's one weekly prog night (I think - and it's still on a bloody Sunday!), a monthly night (Sunny) and the other events (with the exception of the internationals) are small and infrequent and the tech scene suffers from a similar problem.
Considering all this - and considering the state of the trance scene down here even two years ago - I don't think the Melbourne TAs have much to complain about!

You make a really good point. Prog and trance, I think, are very closely linked, just as trance and hard dance also are. I think the problem we suffer here is that young crowds are brought into the scene through music being played at 150bpm which limits their appreciation for other styles.
I have noticed people find it hard to appreciate the difference between "hard" and "fast". The toughest set I have ever heard was John Kelly at gatecrasher's world wide live tour in Sydney.
His whole set was this banging german trance sound layered with uplifitng vocals that was played at about 137 bpm, even second trip by hennes and cold. ( if u have it on vinyl spin at this speed and listen to how much more dirty it becomes.)I have heard the same track played here alot faster and it sounds so cheezy!
I have heard prog dj's drop trance tracks and trance dj's build with prog but when u play tracks at 150bpm it leaves no room for diversity.
Just my opinion though.
