Smile Tongue Whats wrong with trance in Melbourne..?

Hey all,
Just wanting to get peoples thoughts as to why the trance scene in melbourne is taking a backseat to so many other genres. If u look at the rest of the world trance is by far the most supported genre of dance, (note i didnt say biggest as house is far bigger, i refer to the crowds and the loyalty of the crowds involved).

You only need to look at dj magazines top 100 0r even just the top ten to see just how many of those dj's are trance dj's. It is the only sound that allows dj's to drop any other genre mid set and have it compliment what they are playing and yet melbournes crowds are being de-educated with "nrg", bad "nrg and lots of bad "nrg".

From what I've seen Melbourne has more than enough quality dj's, passionate punters and excellent production teams and yet even great nights like transcend are only monthly events in relatively small venues.

I have been to various predominent nights in melbourne and am yet to see a crowd respond to a dj like they did for tiesto nye (admittably I missed armin). I loved seeing the "nrg" crowd get a taste of how trance is really played, progressive ,uplifting, than hard and anthemic, than back to uplifting and progressive all over again, rather than a constant feel, but at the same I time was left questioning why trance music in Australia in general is so lightly appreciated on a week to week basis.

I'm not against hard dance music, in fact I love it, but it's got to be played with the other styles to compliment it, chocolate tastes great till u eat 5 kg of it, than it tastes pretty sh_t!

I lived in Sydney for a few years and sublime used to do this very well, if u went to sublime when mark dynamix and andrew james were still there it was a perfect example, tek house, uplifting trance, driving trance hard trance/hard dance and hard house all blended into one night, though what from i hear they are going in the opposite direction as well( will see when i visit in july, yay!)

Would love to see what u all think so maybe some of us can put some plans in action to do something about it! I've been in the scene for a long time and would love nothing more than to see god's music get the credit it deserves, aswell as the dedicated dj's production teams and punters coming together to put melbourne on the world map for trance. (believe me, we're not at the moment).
Cheers,
Scott.

just to clarify, this is not a "back in the day" thread, or an a thread to start arguments, I have written it to try and get people thinking about how we can really push forward using the potential of all melbourne's talented people.
Cheers

I think that trance - considering it probably doesn't have the same "underground" following as, say, prog and tech in Melbourne - is actually not doing to badly to have as many nights as it does. I can remember when this forum first started there weren't any regular trance nights in Melbourne at all (with the exception of Steve Strangis' early morning sets at Sugar Suite) and now there's 5AM, Unify, San Tran, Transcend and all the others that I can't think of right now (hope I got all those names right ). Not only are lots of nights, but they're being held in prime venues like Room, whereas the prog and tech nights are struggling to fill up their more infrequent events being held in much smaller venues. Republic got bumped from Room's Saturday nights, Teriyaki had it's first Friday night at Room for like 8-9 months just the other week, and the Sunday prog night at Q-Bar got scrapped due to lack of interest. Now there's one weekly prog night (I think - and it's still on a bloody Sunday!), a monthly night (Sunny) and the other events (with the exception of the internationals) are small and infrequent and the tech scene suffers from a similar problem.

Considering all this - and considering the state of the trance scene down here even two years ago - I don't think the Melbourne TAs have much to complain about!

I think as long as the GBH is flowing you aint going to get people listening to the good shit
As i said before kandi kids dont know the difference between the wiggles and decent trance artists.

lol, i would hate to be the nail u just hit on the head! Melbourne seems to have a plethora of good trance dj's from what I can gather. and yet nye just been i sat in horror and watched Tiesto get supported by nrg dj's. All due respect to those mentioned above but u only have to watch the tiesto dvd and imagine them playing before or after that to see how completely ridiculous it is.

You make a really good point. Prog and trance, I think, are very closely linked, just as trance and hard dance also are. I think the problem we suffer here is that young crowds are brought into the scene through music being played at 150bpm which limits their appreciation for other styles.
I have noticed people find it hard to appreciate the difference between "hard" and "fast". The toughest set I have ever heard was John Kelly at gatecrasher's world wide live tour in Sydney.
His whole set was this banging german trance sound layered with uplifitng vocals that was played at about 137 bpm, even second trip by hennes and cold. ( if u have it on vinyl spin at this speed and listen to how much more dirty it becomes.)I have heard the same track played here alot faster and it sounds so cheezy!

I have heard prog dj's drop trance tracks and trance dj's build with prog but when u play tracks at 150bpm it leaves no room for diversity.
Just my opinion though.
