you seem to have the cables right, although if you want to receive sequenced data from your computer, you'll need to hook your Audigy's MIDI Out to the MIDI Thru (I believe) on your virus..

check the master volume level and make sure the input on your Audigy is turned on..

Nope.

Midi controller midi out --> Computer midi in
Computer midi out --> Virus midi in
Virus midi out --> computer midi in (only if you need to automate it manually or do midi dumps)

Virus Audio out --> Soundcard audio in
------- or -------
Virus audio out --> mixer. Mixer audio out --> Soundcard in if you have a mixer.

To run the virus properly, you need 2 midi ins on your computer and 1 midi out. If your midi controller has USB, use that and then run the midi ports on the audigy for the virus.

Try to first test out your audio connections by connecting gear that you know works for sure. If that's not the case, try this:

press both "Edit" and "Sync" buttons together next to "FM" knob - this should audition the currently selected patch for you. Also, check your HD interface patching. Oftentimes you need to route your analog in to main out. I had quite a bit of hard time getting that to work on Presonus Firestation.

You can also try recording something in your DAW - if you see audio signal show up in an audio track, then you probably have a setting that wasn't checked on your hd interface. Some recording interfaces don't offer ZLM (zero latency monitoring) and rely on DAW applications (such as Cubase) to route the audio signal.

If you are using Cubase, make sure you have enabled monitoring on the track.

When all else fails, RTFM. (Read That Friendly Manual)

cheers!

Quick MIDI lesson.

This on a sound producing device

  • MIDI IN- information from previous device
  • MIDI OUT - Controller information or overlow from the sound producing device.
  • MIDI THRU - Data not meant for this device.

Basically MIDI out is for controller info, SYSEX dumps or overflow data. i.e. the synth is 8 note polyphonic and you send it 9. That 9th note will be sent out as overflow for a second connected device to take care of.

MIDI THRU is used to repeat data to other devices.

The best way to use a controller keyboard, connect it to another MIDI port or use a USB connected keyboard.

Forget about midi through. You can plug it with blue-tac if you want. To send data from you virus back to your computer, virus midi out --> computer midi in, simple as that. If you don't have USB on your controller, then you will need a midi interface. Something like an M-Audio midisport 2x2 will do you fine. Don't get the 1x1 because it leaves no room for expansion.

I never realized that there was such thing as having more than 1 midi in/out on a computer

How did you think people run hardware studios with 10 synths? You can have as many midi ports as you want (within reason obviously).
