Personally, I think the whole thing is pretty interesting. To me, his story is plausible but not really believable. It fits with what's generally known about the case, but there are really too many problems with his account to declare the mystery solved.
Firstly, the baby's jumpsuit was found separately (ie not with the body), and it wasn't torn to shreds as if by an animal, so someone had to have done something with it. Whether it was this old codger and his mates, I don't know. However, if they really did remove the baby from the jumpsuit, why weren't their fingerprints or handprints (or DNA) on it?
Secondly, why take the body back to Melbourne? A dead and decomposing baby (particularly one that's been mauled by a dingo) isn't something you're going to sneak through customs or take on a plane as hand luggage, nor are you going to put it in the back of the car.
Thirdly, the dingo incident happened at around dinner time, 7-8pm or so if my memory serves me correctly. This bloke reckons they were out hunting rabbits. Who the fuŠk hunts rabbits in the dark?
The policeman who started the original investigation had other doubts as well, like the amount of blood on the jumpsuit. He also reckons that either he or another policeman in the area would've heard gunshots (remembering that sound travels a long way in the desert).
It's all very interesting though, I don't imagine this case will ever really disappear from the headlines.
