Not strictly true but my observation is that hard trance is called as such because of more abrasive sounds -- for example, the air-sucking THUMPHHH kick drums found in a lot of tracks. It isn't a subtle nudge, or even a wink of a kick. Rather, it's a hard-hitting hammerfest that drives and burrows into your skull at high volumes. Sometimes, they're adopted gabber babies, slowed down to fit. Similar cases can be made for audible distortion on certain types of synth riff sounds, and maybe an acid influence, as commonly presented in the case of Kai Tracid (which is like, trance & acid, maaan!).
