Peeps, I have some nagging problems with my MOTU HD interface I'm hoping someone can help with.

Here's the deal: I have MOTU 828 MKII setup as my sound card for audio playback. When I playback any of MP3's through it, I notice an extremely high level of noise. This is especially noticeable at low volumes in Winamp. Since you can't use windows volume controls for controlling MOTU's playback of computer audio, the only control over the sound you have in Winamp and on the main volume knob on MOTU itself. When I playback through RME interface - everything seems fine (so I know that MP3 itself is clean). I'm wondering if there's someone who had similar problem and found some work around. Sadly, MOTU doesn't offer any solution short of a blurb along the lines "yeah, you can't controll volume for apps like Winamp or Windows Media player using MOTU's CueMix - you must rely on the app iteslf" - which sux!

Also, the other thing I noticed is clipping when recording with regular volume levels. I checked my gains and they are set to default. I'm wondering if I should switch to -10dB; however, there's no option to switch main outs to -10dB though. If you know something that can be done about that - also, chime away.

If you're Firewire card has a NEC chipset, that's the cause of your problems. Go out and buy an Adaptec Firewire card and your problems are most likely solved. If you haven't a NEC chipset, I don't know what's wrong, maybe remove dust from your fire wire cable or get yourself a better cable (yes, they're some differences in the quality of firewire cables).

Interesting suggestion... I have a different firewire card uses SiG chipset. I'll give it a shot... I also noticed clipping at normal levels too. the manual on MOTU is shitty, at best. Their support of PC users still leaves much to be desired and quite frankly almost irritating to the point where I wanna return the damn thing. Though, for the price I paid for it ($600 New)I doubt I'd get anything decent. I guess I'll just have to use RME for playback of MP3's.

I acutally had a MOTU before and I returned it because of shitty support on windows. This time around it is better but still not as flexible as RME. I also hate the fact that MOTU has made no efforts to produce DP for windows. I feel cheated, actually... but that's another story.

Cyn, did you try calling MOTU support? I find them to be quite helpful when I have issues with my mkII, but maybe I've just been lucky. The mkIIs seem to have fewer issues than their MOTU PCI counterparts but it can be a bit hit or miss.

I think the problem is that most of us these days are building our own systems and MOTU takes more of a "it's your computer's fault" strategy. This is one of the clear advantages RME has over it's competition.
