help me! network problems

i just hooked the two family computers up and im now lost at what to do
it was working last night but now it isnt. there is a connection, but they arent recognising each other, just themselves
- they both run xp
- they are both turned on and physically connected

?????
can someone shed any light on the situation?

sounds to me like they are on a different subnet..... in network connection --> properties of the LAN connection --> properties of the TCP/IP protocal: has it been set to 'automatically obtain ip addresss' ?

if it is and its still not working then I would suggest setting a maual IP. so make the IP of one computer 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 and the IP of the other computer 192.168.0.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0

This should work

You can test if it has by 'pinging' the other computer by going... start --> run --> cmd: then type 'ping

You can test to see what your IP adress is by typing 'ipconfig'
This will also tell you what subnet you are on.
