Bush declines NAACP invitation

Well, at least we can say we know where Bush stands with the NAACP and the black voters, for that matter. The first President since Herbert Hoover not to show up.

Congrats, Bush.

And the head of the NAACP has urged him to reconsider:

Of course Bush blames the NAACP and their "rhetoric" on their tumultuous relationship:

Bush criticizes NAACP leaders

Published July 11, 2004

YORK, PENNSYLVANIA -- President Bush leveled an unusual attack on the NAACP's leaders Friday, saying his relationship with them has deteriorated to the point that it scarcely exists.

Bush chose not to attend the NAACP's annual convention, which begins this weekend. He is the first president in more than 70 years who has not attended a convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

"There are a lot of people I admire in the NAACP," Bush said. But he added, "I describe my relationship with the current leadership as basically non-existent because of their rhetoric."

NAACP President Kweisi Mfume said he is disappointed in Bush's decision.

First time in 70 years. Something to really be proud of. Guess Bush really does see "black or white" (sorry, couldn't help the bad pun).

smart move.
the NAACP has treated him like shit since before the 2000 election.
he knows that the NAACP is not the end all be all of the african-american vote this time around.
IMO it's wasted energy to pander to them.

Regretfully, I think you're right on the money with Bush's stance.

It really does show his "compassionate" side to his conservatism though, doesn't it?

You can sit here and chastise Bush all you want for not going to the event. But Julian Bond made the following outrageous comments, and has yet to offer an apology. No one should be cajoled by the press into going to an event full of that much hatred.

The NAACP can rot in their own self-serving liberal ghetto until they actually act non-partisan like their tax status states that they should be.

FYI, Bush has been working with many lesser known black leaders, because they actually take moderate and reasonable stands on the issues. Check out Project 21, B.O.N.D., Congress of Racial Equality, etc.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Republicans appeal "to the dark underside of American culture, to that minority of Americans who reject democracy and equality," NAACP Chairman Julian Bond said yesterday at the civil rights group's 94th annual convention.

"They preach racial neutrality and practice racial division ... their idea of reparations is to give war criminal Jefferson Davis a pardon," Mr. Bond said during his welcoming remarks. "Their idea of equal rights is the American flag and Confederate swastika flying side by side."

Well nice to see Bush confirm the long held notions about him in the African American community, which is that he's nothing more than a self-serving, big business, conservative bufoon. He doesn't even have the decency to meet with a group that has the history in the struggle for equality in American society such as the NAACP. Whatever we may believe about the NAACP today, this act is one more disgusting notch in my belt against George W. Bush. Sadly too many blacks won't get up off of their asses and vote especially in the South where it is needed badly and a large black population exists. Hope the NAACP will spare no efforts to organize black voters in battleground states, every vote counts. The Shrub must go, time to put a president in the White House with compassion and respect for all segments of American society.

Why does he have to go? He's talked about equal rights for minorities many times before including the Latin and Black communities. God the dude turns down an invitation and suddenly hes rascist and doesn't care about black people. My god, i hope you people aren't this sensitive in your normal every day lives or you'd never be able to leave your house in the morning.

+++++++++ Hey Imokruk you seem to make it sound like what Mr. Bond said was a distinct, innacurate and profound fallacy. I ask you this question if people feel they have a right to display visages of the confederate symbol in society, then there are others with just as much right to speak up against it because for whatever heritage it may mean to some Southerners, it has a different meaning to others, let's not kid ourselves on that fact. I have never been to the South personally and don't believe it is as horrible today as in the past for blacks. The NAACP had just a little bit of a role in bringing that about, along with other afformentioned black groups in your previous post. Bush may not respect elements in the NAACP but as is his policy with dealing with others who he doesn't take a likeing to he behaves as a first rate Jackass in his attitudes. This is the man that you respect as President, shake my head.

Thank you very much the key word being "TALKED" He also talked about Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, he talked about no child left behind, he talked about Al Qaeda in Iraq, he talked about American jobs moving overseas as a positive thing, talk, talk, talk. All the man does is talk, his actions however serves his masters, the Corportate World. This you cannot deny under any circumstance.

P.S. I never labelled Bush a racist, I try to stay away from that form of commentary on people until I know them. With Bush I just let his talking say it all. I'm sure he has a keen interest in providing more federal funding to improve the schools in urban, innercity areas. Too bad thanks to his talk many schools are still waiting, while vouchers are given out to a few and the rest will make do with the available resources.

And that makes the Shrub's actions okay. Nice to know that little fact. Wonder how many broken promises he will have in store for the Latino constituency this time around, free immigration through Cali, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico as he panders for their votes. While you see him as not a bad person, I see Bush as a lying, arrogant, English language butchering fraud. It all started with his election to the White House in the first place so there is no surprise at everything that has since occured in his tenure.
