Talking Headphones are great! But a question

Wow am so amazed, today i bought new headphones before i produced on speakers, and lately, i got alot of complaints from the wife of my dad (not my mom)

since the kick produces alot of pounding sound and she don't like that, so i told my dad hey its your wife, i can't produce on walkman headphones go buy me good one.

so i bought Philips SBC-HP820, big ones, and am very shocked.

the sound quality is sooooooooooo much better with these headphones, the stereo instruments are so clear, even the most subtle layerd instruments are not hard to hear. there is a much warmer sound on these headphones than on my speakers.

However i know headphones are closer to the ear than speakers, so it's pretty obvious maybe what i am saying?

My question would be, i developed nice mixing skills without great monitors and such, but i did those with my speakers, should i keep the same mixing style with headphones?

i mean i can probably mix it flawless on headphones, but how will this sound without headphones? anyone experienced that can answer me this question?

Tnx

Fahad.

I've monitors and headphones.
Everytime I've mixed something with headphones on and listen it later with monitors I have to turn up the volume to hear something.

Thats just my experience. Someone with real knowledge might give you better answer.

Mix and make your sounds with headphones, but do the mastering and final tuning with monitors.
U should never ever tune the stereo image of your song with headphones, cuz left ear cant listen to the right ear signal and the oposite, so stereo image is very diferent when listening on speakers and headphones

Also be careful that you don't turn up the volume too much, as with headphones there's nearly no space for the sound to lose amplitude. Think of it as jumping down a flight of stairs and landing on a mattress vs. jumping down a flight of stairs and landing on the ground...just shoes and socks and your feet, nothing else.

equally as importantly, thing panning, when there is speakers you can hear from the left channel with the right ear partially, and vice versa, if you are wearing headphones, you can't if a sound is panned totally to one side

think of headphones as using a magnifying glass to get all the small details done right and using speakers as looking at the overall picture... IMO, but are equally essential to getting a good mix

headphones are vital, you get a mild taste of what you will hear when you tune is pumped on a 30k+ rigg, you hear stuff that you cant hear in your studio at 30watts on your monitors, they also help to wide a flat central stereo signal " left pushed slight further than the right is pushed right " vE-vA.

you will get more respect from your neighbours at 4am too.

i still have a old pair of q9's (ex bbc 1970s) big rubber things when you pump them they make your eardrums itch to the extent to tickleing your sinuses "thay are damageing" but the sound it warmer and more real than my Sennheiser "imo " are a waste of money at the price.
new cans have a safeguard since mid 90s to protect you ears this helps to enhance the stuff you cant hear from your monitors, due to the reduction of the dangerous frequencies.

btw the q9s are older then me
( dont build them like they use to lol)
