how do I get rid of this distortion?

Maybe not just audiophiles, but to anyone that's ever set up a home studio-type thing. I have your basic set-up here...... 2 turntables, mixer, amp, 2 speakers, and my computer.

Anyways, I am getting this pretty awful "bass-like" hum coming from my speakers when everything is turned on. I was wondering if there's any certain way things have to be set up, as far as magnatism or whatever goes, to preveny this sort of distortion. It's also affecting my recording, like when I go to record (use Soundforge) it will record everything, but the bass will be almost non-existent but the treble is jacked ALL the way up. When I had it set up before (when I lived in NC) it didn't do this, but for some reason it's doing it now. I basically have it set up like this........

amp in the middle, with my mixer sitting directly on top of that. Both my tables are on either side of the amp. Should the amp be lower? I thought I read somewhere that the amp needs to be in a lower place than everything else, but I don't know. Anyopne have a clue what's causing the distorion?

Few of things you can do straight away to help that.

First is to make sure that all the units are plugged into one mains supply, this reduces the potential difference over the whole system and you should notice an audible reduction in the noise.

Make sure your speakers are near nothing else with magnets in (monitor etc)

Other one is to but an ground loop isolator like the one here: http://www.beststuff.co.uk/xitel_gr...op_isolator.htm

Are you speakers on the same table as your decks? That could be it, if so get some spikes for your speakers.

either your speakers are causeing the feedback becasuse of your turntables...dependson teh speakers and tables though...if you have technique 1200's and lets just say average home speakers, the magnets from teh turntables could be causeing this effect by being to close to teh speakers.

Anotehr situation could be that your turntables re not grounded using the ground wire.

Or your amp is too close to yout tables and causing this hum.

Just move the damn amp.

Also check your connection to your computer(with regards to the recording thing. Don't know what cables your using or even what type of connection..that could be a big problem too.
