Luckily rather few people are killed over music related racism. I'd start worrying about it after we fix hate related to race, religion, sexual preference...you know all that other stuff. (not that i see this possibly happening...ever.)

The elitism in music is there for the same reason secret societies still exist today. People want to feel superior to their peers, and if music is an important part of their life, then they'll take that avenue. It's really no different with any other subject matter...you get the same attitudes with people whose lives revolve around cars (company vs. company), coding (language vs. language), food (a rather large arena, but what comes first to mind is cooking with fat vs. no fat), etc....
It's a part of humanity, at least in today's society, and it's just something you're going to have to learn to put up with.

Absolutely. As shameful a lowmind mentality as it is -- like being the Queen or King of high school and later finding out the world is a MUCH bigger place and life doesn't revolve around the transient years of adolescence -- you quickly come to realize that there's an upside: there may be chinstroking snobs, but that doesn't stop you from expressing your own views as to what you enjoy. Take that empty wineglass from the elitist, fill it with your own personal brand of confidence, and splash it back in his face. Find out what you REALLY enjoy, not the hypocrisy that comes from someone who is supposedly "against the conformist mainstream" yet someone who tries to impose his tastes on you because of some deep-seated insecurity he won't be bold enough to admit.
It's been stated here numerous times, it's simple:
I like what I listen to what I like.
Speaking of, I see a lot of Emperor's New Clothes scenarios: people who were earlier critical of something who will jump on the bandwagon later, and a lot of digital wankery that "passes" (not even barely) for music criticism, but is instead an unbridled cauldron of vitriolic hate and blah-blah-blahs. I usually tend to stick to the positive side of things and wax on about records that I like. Music's such a luxury, and I'm keeping my ears open. If I revert to technosnob form like a vinyl-munching werewolf, feel free to whup me with a silver 12". Really, I'd prefer to spend time with a loved one, listening to music we enjoy.
I like trance, techno, noisecore, Avril Lavigne, etc.
