Toronto has played a significant role in generating all the hype surrounding DJ Demi, as clubbers get to know him at his bimonthly residency at Boa Redux. Home to one of the world's most advanced nightclub sound systems, Boa features the all-digital German-made Dynacord Alpha system. Similar Alpha set-ups can now be found at The Docks and Space in Miami, but Boa's boasts the largest blueprint of its kind per square foot.
That means sound at the Chinatown movie-theatre-turned-nightclub (which hosted its first party last New Year's Eve) is truly loud and clear -- as long as the DJ knows how to work a system as powerful as Boa's with ease and finesse (and not just by cranking the volume). With specially tiled floors and walls suspended from the original structure to ensure an acoustically balanced space, the city's latest after-hours has attracted industry heavy-hitters like Danny Tenaglia, Victor Calderone and New York's Def Mix roster.
"Boa is a dream club for the DJ," Demi says. "It's got that feel where you can play longer sets and more minimal tracks because the sound system picks up those fine details. In a smaller club or on a smaller system, it wouldn't have that effect. I can play everything I love -- all my sets [at Boa] have been really different. I think you get the best out of a DJ if he can really play what he wants without disappearing completely." EM
