final scratch, serato scratch, ms pinky

Hello all,

I'm looking for the best solution to mix digital files in the home studio, specifically personal edits and remixes coming from the computer.

So far, I have used Pioneer CDJ 1000's, and final scratch. I got rid of the Pioneer CDJ after finding out that there were vinyl control solutions out there that allow you to manipulate digital files with control vinyl and your usual technics 1200's.

I was disappointed with final scratch. When I switched from digital back to normal vinyl, I got a hum sound coming over the system.

I've heard that Serato Scratch by rane has had good reviews, but also that there is some known problem with 'drifting,' resulting from bad pressings of their control vinyl. Hopefully they will fix this.

I also just caught wind of "Ms. Pinky's" system (www.mspinky.com) which can be used to control video and audio from control vinyl.

Has anyone found a solution without flaw? Let me know, your opinions are appreciated!

JS

supposedly Serato has already developed a software update that compensates for the faulty record pressing, but it's still in beta testing. Everyone on the Serato board is anxiously waiting its release, which is rumored to be soon.

That's good.. from what I've heard there are problems with the pressings. Why don't they just repress the control vinyl rather than adjusting to the problem with a software fix? $$ save?

They should repress the control vinyl and send 'em out to current users, as well as pack it with new units. It's probably not as profitable to make that move though.

FinalScratch works for me perfectly. Some people have had problems and no support, but that can happen anywhere. As for the humming, that has nothing to do with FinalScratch, that is a ground loop and can happen with any equipment. I had the same problem, when I connected the power to my laptop, I would get a bad hum when using Phono. It only happened in certain locations, had no humming in some places, then in my house it hums. So I bought a small ground filter to put inline with the power cord of my laptop. No more humming!

They actually are doing both. They are re-pressing the new vinyl and making software corrections so that it will be available to the current users. The program will be able to differentiate between the corrected records and the originals so it saves them money and will remedy the problem faster.

However, the new vinyl won't be sent out to the current users, I'm guessing this would cost Rane an outrageous amount of money. I did wish I got some free control vinyl out of the deal though

Are they selling extra control vinyl seperately through any authorized dealer? I know that the guys over at AGI pro DJ are carrying control vinyl but they seem to be the only ones, at least that I've seen.

I think I'll end up going with Serato after everything that I've heard/read. To be honest, after all of my experiences with Stanton, whether their product is actually made by them or not, I would still rather not endorse their goods.

I'm sure that any reputable dealer that stocks SSL will have the replacement vinyl. I ordered two extra from AGI, I got SSL from them in the first place. Really cool guys.

I have Final Scratch and I'm completely happy with it. Although, it on PC, it still works great. I would consider moving it over to Apple, but the cost of a Powerbook is a little much for me right now. I think both products have their good and bad qualities. I think its more or less of a trade off rather than anything else.

If you're talking about Mac vs. PC, you're absolutely right. There's definitely pros and cons to both.

If you're talking about SSL vs. FinalScratch then you're way off base. SSL is far superior to FS. I've owned both and I can sincerely say this. The general consensus at the Serato boards right now is when the pitch drift issue is fixed, there won't be anything more to complain about . . .

Just get virtualdj 2.01 and some timecoded vinyl.. for best results buy a soundcard with asio(low latency) drivers like the maya 44 usb . It will be cheaper and better !! mixvibes dvs and djdecks are other solutions...
