What is everyone's opinion on this. Good idea? Bad idea? Cheating yourself somehow? At certain times I find it easier but that could be because my monitor isn't turned up enough (can't play too loud in an apartment).

I was thinking the very same thing...thats one of the purposes of the cans..so u can beat match...did u think u were gonna beat match thru the monitors?
well..I guess you could do that..use the headphone out and put it to your monitors..but that would be really weird, and I dont think the headphone amp would put out enuf juice.

yeah...use the headphones to beat match(unless you 'listen' to the record, then u really kick ass)

Let me clarify because that's not what I meant. Obviously you use your headphones. What I meant was, most people have one ear listening to the cue and the other ear listening to the monitor (ie. 1 ear with the headphone the other one without). They beat match this way. What I was suggesting is to have both the playing record and the cue brought up in your headphones (now covering both your ears) and beat match strictly using the headphones and not a cue/monitor combination.

Does this make sense now?

You can do it that way, but it's harder then cueing with one ear in and one ear out, in my opinion. I also have neighbours, but your monitorsound doesn't have to be on 140 dB level. I can mix with my stereo on normal sound level, but THAT ONLY WORKS FOR ME WHEN I HAVE MY HEADPHONES AT A LOWER SOUND LEVEL THEN YOUR MONITOR!!!!

I don't think I could possibly beatmatch strictly using headphones. I guess it's something you could train yourself to do, and I've heard of people suggesting that you do just in case you spin somewhere that the monitor speakers are total shit.

It's a good skill to have, cause you never know when your gonna need it!

So, like, does anyone know exactly WHY it is so much easier to beatmatch with one ear listening to the monitor and one at the speaker? I mean, it shouldn't be, should it, because the same signal is going to both, right? So is it something with the brain, or what?

I've found a combination to be the easiest thus far. Using 1 ear monitor and 1 ear headphones. I can get it matched roughly, I then use strictly headphones (now with both the cue and main playing into them) to fine tune it. I can hear the slight differenes quicker when listening strictly to headphones than I can the other way. That's just me though and I'm very new to this.

I once knew. Learned it on the physologi. But I would guess it has something to to with the distance of the sound-source. When both tunes come from the head set, its hard to figure out what sound is coming from what direction. But if you have one tune in the headphones (coming from an exact location) and one tune in the surroundings (a difuse location) the brain easier can determine what beat is what. If I´m not correct... please correct me!

It differs between different tracks I think. Songs that have a clear bass and not too much other "noise" uses to be easier to be mixed with one ear on cue and other on monitor. However songs which have a lot of stuff in them are easier with both channels in headphones since you follow the bassline and melody too. At least that's how I work...

i used to mix mostly in my headphones with my old numark mixer, but when i got my rane 2016, this wasn't possible. i definitely took a step back trying to do it with only the cue in the headphone. but, now that i have gotten somewhat used to the rane, i like it better. most of the dj booths i have seen do not have the split cue capability, so mixing with the monitor is essential! just my opinion
