Studio Monitors vs. The Real World

ok, heres my problem. The studio monitors I use are Alesis M1 Active MK2's. now when I do the final mixdown I use the monitors exclusively, and I get the song sounding great. I also give it a second check through my headphones (Sennheiser HD 280 Pro). in the headphones it still sounds good but not as good. however, I expect that from headphones. Then, when I bounce to disk and take it down to my truck and listen (four speaker component system) it dosen't sound nearly as dynamic and powerfull.
So what gives? is it the kind of monitors? my inexperience?
any suggestions? I'm tired of wasting time and test disks.

Studio Info:
PowerMac G4
Protools 6.4/Mbox
Reason 2.5
MiniMoog V
Alesis M1 Active MK2's
Radium 61 MIDI controler

i think it just depends on the speaker system. try to get it to sound as best as possible on as many systes as you can. that means you have to make some compmrimises. just get it sounding basically good, not too much bass, not too much treble, etc. and leave the final tweaking up to the listener . .

Th best thing to do before mastering your piece of work, is to listen to other works in the same genre for a long enough time to mostly forget what yours sounds like. Listen to that stuff in any test environments you can find.

then... once you've forgotten yours, make it sound as great and professional as you can, burn it, and then test it.

You have to give your ears a refresher before spending too much time on a single project.
