Noise when Cueing

Does anyone ever get grinding noises when holding the non-live record in place ready to cue it? Like you're holding the platter while it's trying to spin or something?

I'm not pressing down too hard but I get it sometimes and it's quite annoying and worrying. Maybe I should hold the record on the label when Cueing? Although i'm much more comfortable at the edge.

I have Stanton STR8-100's and yeh I use slip-mats

This happens with one of my records(the adam freeland mix of smells like teen spirit). When I cue it, theres this rubbing noise between the slipmat and the record. I just ignore it and I'm happy that it only happens with one record(if it happened with all of em I'd probably consider it a bigger problem). I think its just the way the label is made that makes the noise(maybe the paper is glossy or something).

I have stantons as well, str8-30's, and that happens to me all the time. From what i've figured, its just the slipmat gripping to the platter, but slipping where it contacts the record. Its just the stupid [stock] stanton slips that make a lot of noise becuase of the bigass logo silkscreened [or whatever] onto it.

I'm not sure what this is caused by, but I have had it happen to me as well. It hasn't happened for ages though, so really I can't tell what its caused by, although it might be due to the slipmat not being 100% flat on the platter (at a guess).

Sorry I'm not much help

I know there is a potential amount of static electricity that can build up by holding a record in place while a slipmat spins underneath. This problem (believe it or not) is even amplified when the turntables are not grounded properly. I don't know how to remedy this problem completely, but just wanted to give you a plausible explanation.

I have the ST-100's (same as the STR8-100's but with a S-shaped arm) and I never had any problems like that except when I pluged the TT into a contact that wasn't grounded. The explaination of the slipmat causing the noise can't be true, 'cuz on some of my records, the slipmat follows the platter in stead of the record and I don't hear it. Check your groundings.

Or there is a problem with your TT. The preamp in my ST100 got broken once (there came absolutely NO sound out of it anymore) and the dealer told me there are often problems with the internal preamp of the ST100's (and consequentaly also the STR8-100's). If your groundings are OK, contact your dealer with the problem...

ive been on at stantton. its a stanton only problem shouldnt affect performance tho. i get it ALL the time nearly every record. think its just friction and the metal that the platters made of

damn that sucks. it's really irritating as I dj at home, and as the volume isn't that loud you can obviously hear the friction noise quite a bit. furtheremore - it's a nasty 'metal scraping' sound which never sounds too healthy

cut a circle of polythene the size of your slipmat from a poly bag and stick it under your slipmat, unless of course you havent grounded very well, in which case that would cause more problems than it would solve due to static build-up.

you can buy "butter-rugs" that do the same but they will probably be static-free.
