MOS at Lucid - Ashley Caselle - August 21

I have yet to check Lucid out since it has opened and might go for this. Has anyone else been? Have never heard Ashley Caselle before, what does he play? I've found places where it says he plays progressive and others that describes what he plays as his "unique spaced out techno house sound".

Yes, one of the DJ's i've been waiting for finally returns. Ashley Casselle is one half of Lostep and Ashtrax, both great production outfits. Casselle had a essential Mix in 2003 which anyone not familar with his sound should try to get a hold of. Top quality stuff, leaning towards progressive house and breaks. I wouldn't expect any of the techno bangers or epic trance from this guy (thank god !), just a silky smooth progressive journey.

Just to get an idea of what a casselle set would sound like. I've added the tracklist from his highly rated EM from 2003. Pete Tong describes it as an after hours session, but it's so much more. Talk about a 2 hour trip through the various sub genres of house, progressive and breaks this set has something for everyone who enjoys non cheesy electronic music. The last 30 minutes is absolutely brillant...keep an ear open for the alice in wonderland reading, and the cool breaks that follow. Simply sublime !

Ashley Casselle Broadcasted on Sunday 12th January, 2003

Africian Head Charge - 'My God (trackapella)' (on u sound)
Africian Head Charge - 'Ethiopian Praises (trackapella)'
Philip Glass - 'The Light (trackapella)' (Nonesuch Records)
The Jahlights - 'Right Road to Jahlight (edit)' (Trojan Records)
Kieservelten - 'Dubolition' (G-stone)
Subtech - 'Southern Chill (trackapella)' (Dubtech)
Osmosis - 'Jungle Freak' (Finger Lickin')
M.A.N.D.Y. - 'Put Put Put' (Physical)
Spoon Wizard - 'Pantaloon (stabilizer mix)' (Functional Breaks)
Saint Ettiene vs. Faze Action - 'Sylvie (Bonus Tickle Mix)'
Bandulu - 'Phase In' (Infonet Records)
Kinobe - 'Butterfly (swag Falling Further Dub)' (Zomba)
Erro - 'Change For Me (joey negro Akabuku dub)' (Z - Records)
George T presents - 'itz heaven (hippe and tony's mendocino's melody mix)'
Cutlab - 'Loud Kissin (asad Rizvi's Silverlining Smooch Mix)' (Big Chief)
Casselle and Christopher - 'Midnight Sun (accapella)' (Fuju)
angel Moraes - 'Tribal Function (trackapella)' (Dot Dot Dot records)
Voice Stealer - 'We Suspect (trackapella)' (Mass Transit)
Pete Heller and Tedd Patterson present The Look and Feel - 'Big Room Drama'
Proper Filthy Naughty - 'To the Beat (the light mix)' (White Label)
Nick K - '80's Bam' (White Label)
Julez - 'My Groove (Ali Wells remix)' (Premier Sounds)
Soul of Man - 'The Drum' (Finger Lickin)
Soul Oddysey - 'Rapture (trackapella)' (Rumour Records)
Loco - 'Eighty Ten (oliver klein and baggy bukaddor breaks mix)'
Rock - 'Resistance (tonemeister breakbeat mix)' (Inverus)
Jay Burnett - 'Rock the resistance (trackapella)' (CDR)
Lo Step - 'Burma' (Quad Communications)
Jon Carter - 'Humanism (Valentino Kanzayani remix)'
Cari Lekebusch - 'Head Up' (Audio Mekanixc.)
Helicpoter - 'On Ya Way (Trackapella)' (Tic Tac Toe Records.)
Ashtrax - 'Helsinki Revisited' (Deviant)
Planet Funk - 'Inside All The People (Harvey's Sleepy in Ibiza Mix)'
Nik Boulton - 'Adaptation from Alice in Wonderland' (CDR)
Tosca - 'Ambient Emily' (G-Stone)
Ashtrax - 'Play it Rosa' (Ashtrax)
Maurice and Noble feat. Jane Hadley - 'faith Delivers (ashtrax breaks mix)'
Guise - 'Voodoo Glow' (White Label)

Anyone spot Lostep - Burma in there ? Yeah...he was playing that in 2003 -- and only after Sasha remixes it in 2004 for his involver are people recognizing what a phenomenal track it is. I'm definately there to support this relatively under rated DJ, and also check out what Lucid has in store for Toronto clubbers.

More info on Ashley Casselle for those who are interested :

Ashley's DJ career began 10 years ago after fellow Hastonian John Digweed asked him to take over the alternative room of his new night Bedrock on Hastings pier. This gave him scope to experiment and entertain in his own style, blending vintage funk with phat beats, disco with dubby techno and all manner of different musical styles, he
quickly gained respect from a wide range of DJs which resulted in a residency at Riviera with Stuart Patterson where he developed his blend of funky tech even further. Later he found himself joining Sasha & Digweed on their highly acclaimed Northern Exposure tour, playing to highly enthusiastic up for it crowds which helped pave the way for his next residency..at Gatecrasher! He suddenly found himself playing before legends like Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold, his groovathon sets becoming the stuff of Northern folklore..

Since those hey-days Ashley has risen from playing seminal deep house clubs like 'riviera' with kenny Hawkes+stuart patterson to earning residency status at gatecrasher.besides the usual domestic gigs at Cream, Colours, Bedrock etc, the last 12 months have seen him headlining internationally at [to name a few]...Vinyl NYC, Spundae in San Fransisco, Zouk in Singapore, Home in Sydney, La Boom in Mexico as well as China, Japan, Canada, S.Africa, Holland etc... in July, he takes up Paul van Dyk's invitation to play the Berlin Love Parade spinning in front of a million people on Paul's truck !!.

As Ashtrax [with James Christopher], he produces irresistibly danceable records with no genre restrictions, blending house, techno, breaks and ear nudging melodies.. having remixed PVD in a breakbeat stylee, Timo Maas and more the Ashtrax sound has become a staple diet for DJ's who want something exciting and different This year will see the new Ashtrax single 'Digital Reason' released on Deviant and the spacey vocal house anthem 'Midnight Sun' on Junior/Fuju. The duo will start live shows around Nov with 'Digital Reason' already in huge demand from jocks months before it's release.

Ashley has released 2 mix cd’s - 'Deviations' on deviant and 'Response' on Automatic to critical acclaim reflecting the diversity of his sets, understandable when you consider he's played alongside everybody from Danny Howells to Adam Freeland to Junior Vasquez !!.

No kidding. I'll probably end up feeling like a wallflower while I'm there instead of busting a groove.

Are you fucken kidding me. Goddamn dress codes. I hope it isn't too strict, how the hell do clubs expect the handcore 'dance' fans to embrace the place when they outline a dress code only uppity yuppies will wear. Haven't been to Lucid, but if they want to survive, they'll have to accomadate the large contingent of clubbers who prefere to dress to dance, and not to impress.

Anyone have definate info on what the dress code for Lucid is ?

sorry to dissapoint, but lucid's dress code is strict from what I've heard. And it is designed to attract an 'upper class yuppie'. No jeans, no sneakers, etc. basically a shirt with a collar. And as for keeping themselves alive, well leave that to them, but if you do go, I bet only 1/25 people will know who's on the decks. Remember this place is only open till 4am as well.

Yeah, I can vouch for Sly_Guy on this one. Dress code is pretty strict at Lucid. It's meant to be a high-end clubbing experience.

Maybe I'll break my partying hiatus to check Lucid out... Andy, we should talk to Emily about this one!
