Mystery shopping is when a firm is hired to go into lets say a retail store and try to purchase goods. And all this mytery shopper is doing is testing out the service offered, if the slaes person actually introduced them selves, were they friendly? etc etc.
Then they go back and write a report on the store.

When I worked in retail banking, they use to do this once a year...

unbiased 3rd party evaluation of a place of buisness.

for example, my restuarant uses them. A mystery shopper would go to a restaurant, order food that the server reccomends, have appetizers, an entree, desert and drinks. They are evaluating the service recieved, percieved value, the food, etc.
Only nobody knows that its happening. The Mystery shopper then sends the evaluation form back to the client, and they find out how they performed. It supposed to be better than manager evals, because when you know you are being graded, you will always try better.

You send the bill back to the contractor(you are a sub contractor) and they pay you back, (like an expense account) and pay you for your time. so in essence, you got a free meal.
This sort of thing is used by alot of service industry.

ya...I want to do it, but I dont know who to contact in the Toronto area.

Well, I've never considered TV to be the most reliable source of information, but I saw a news show on this last year that said that a lost of these mystery shopper jobs are scams. You end up getting paid hardly anything, or not at all, and have to invest a lot of time and expenses. It sounds fun, but it's really just a lot of mind-numbing work.

I don't know from personal experience though - just a word of warning about what I heard.

maybe alot of the 'mystery shopping' available online is a sham, but there are alot of legit marketing research companies that do this. Its just a matter of finding the good from the shams, which is why my google search for "mystery shop Toronto" turned up very little, only the ones I THINK are shams (ie ones asking for $25, for a 'list' of assingments)
