It's sort of like that with girls-- you may be highly qualified, but some jerk will come along and get the girl. |
Its tough because when you're in college, and not finished, you're at a median. You're not only competing with the educated, but also the un-educated. There was a time in this country when a highschool diploma, was good enough, and a college education was a +, not so much a necessity.
However, it has changed to the point where a GED is equivalent to a 4 year diploma. Which imo is one of the most pathetic standards and pisses me off everytime I see an application that puts "diploma or GED" in the same selection box. Instead of seperate.
Fact is 4 years of sitting in class rooms 8 hours a day simply dominates a 2+ week course. We have a public highschool system that provides FREE schooling. If you have a kid to take care of, tough shit, its your fault for getting knocked up. Don't have a car, we got school busses. In my arrogant opinion, there just are no excuses.
Just a month ago, I was told for the first time, that I was over-qualified for a job. Infact, I was told bluntly, that I would not be happy with the pay, and would not like my job duties. So I simply didnt get it.

You know experience in the field (Regardless of how menial it is) always helps. Even though you have all this education and are more qualified in that way. Some guys that have somehow worked their way in to that system and have had experience will be taken over you. But, in your situation I suppose it is because they like to have mindless drones that only do what they're told.
GED and High School diploma thing though... Well nowadays it seriously is like getting a high school diploma. I don't consider it much of an accomplishment to have graduated considering the incredibly low standards, and the fact that you can just be good at a sport and be launched right through high school. I understand some people may struggle to graduate, but I'd be willing to say they're pretty stupid if they can't make it. If there are situations which keep them from it I can see that. But academics in the US public schools are really lacking. Not only how they teach it but also who teaches it and the resources they have available to them. We all know the public system is jacked up right now. Some people that are to smart and just want to move on will take a GED and go straight to college and graduate top of their class anyway like my friend.
Sucks all around. You can't get the job because you don't have the experience, you have to much experience, not enough education, to much education, and on and on..
Sometimes though its just because you stink, and they don't want someone smelling up the place. Try taking a shower.
