why?
as i understand, the difference between them is the output volume..
but the stanton is better coz it has kill knobs and some more additions...

the only thing that is better in the vestax is the higher output volume level?!

Bells and whistles don't make a mixer good. Sound quality, usability, and reliablity make a mixer good. In the past i've owned the smx-401 predicessor, the rm-3s. It was total crap w/ bad sound quality, bad upfader curve, bad eqs, and it's phono amp died after 6 months. And yes, i did use a smx-401 a couple of times. The up-faders are still bad and i had lost all faith in stanton b/c my last two mixers from them were pure crap. My smx-501 had a bad cf cruve and the vu meter died on one of the channels within a week of owning it. And my rm-3s became unusable after 6months b/c it's phono amp in ch3 died, it's up faders bleed like a bitch, and it would sounded worse than a behringer.

You should check out ecler smac30 pro as well. Great mixer for the buck. It will be more adapatable then either the stanton or vestax mixers b/c it have a crossfader curve adjustment and will be more reliable than either.

I have the 401, and find it to be a pretty decent mixer. You get what you pay for. Never used that Vestax, looks alright though, except for being blue. Looks like the faders are way short. I'd suggest saving up the few extra bucks and going for the Ecler Smac 30. Damn fine mixer.

Ecler mixers are good, and solid, but what REALLY annoyed me about the smac 30 is how it felt. It just felt horrible to me. The eqs felt way to plasticy and they wobbled side to side. I also didnt like how the upfaders were laid out (slanted)

This is just my opinion. I'm not trying to bash ecler. I havnt gotten to try a nuo5 yet, but it looks alot better. The faders are nice and verticle, and hopefully the eqs feel nice and solid. (god they felt horrible on the smac)

i have the stanton rm-3s, the older version of the smx-401 and i tell you that they are both absolute SHIT!!!. ive had my mixer for only a little over a year, and the sound quality is terrible (allways has been) the sliders feel very loose and plasicy, the fader curve is horrible and my eq nobs stick like hell. yes it has kills, but they are overrated and i never use them.

as for the 401, it is the mixer that is in the booth at my record store which i visit and spin on about 2-3 times a week. and it still has all the same problems.

one of my good friends that i spin with all the time has a vestax (not sure of the exact model) but its a little old and it looks like its been through hell and back, however it still sounds great and the faders and fader curves are very nice.

buy the vestax!!!!! otherwise you are gonna be just like me in a year, shopping for a new mixer and kicking yourself in the ass saying "i hate this thing, why did i buy this piece of crap"

Wow Thats exactly how i felt about both the stanton rm3s and smx-401.

Did you record anything with it? Did you compare it side by side w/ a better mixer? And was it hooked up to a pair of turntables and amp or was it just a cd deck and a pair of headphones?

I ask this because when i purchased my rm3-s i thought it sounded good on their cd decks until i brought it home and connected it to my 1200s and amp. Then everything suddenly sucked. And from my experience w/ stanton mixers, many of them act just like the model they replaced w/ only minor changes. For example, before the rm3-s was the rm3 the major improvement on the rm3-s was the vca crossfader, but it still sucked. Now the smx-401, it still feels the same with the same crappy upfaders as the previous two. Now what have they upgraded now? Oh look another crossfader, Now it's a P&G!!! Too bad the other faders aren't vca or good. Now theres stuff like a upgraded power supply and vu meters! It still doesn't help.

Look at it this way, you can have a killer penny and giles crossfader, but if the other components are not up to snuff the mixer will suck. It's the same way with computers. It may be the latest and fastest cpu, but if it has crappy chipset, mobo, onboard video the pc will still get stomped by a "slower" pc w/ better components.

From my recent experiences with stanton, i really can't suggest their products to anyone. As for vestax, their stuff is solid, but their customer support is just as bad or worst than stanton. But i can't comment on that b/c i never had a friend that needed to contact vestax for problems. So i would say go w/ either a vestax or if you can save up enough cash, the ecler smac30 is probably the best you can get for the money b/c it has a cf curve and is known to be reliable and of great quality.

But just take all of our opinions w/ a grain of salt, and try out for yourself if you can and see what you like best.
