How do you came to figures of 60%? I mean, did you listen to every track and decided that you didn't like 60%?

Kind of useless figures here. Either way I don't agree with you. Just like I haven't heard every remix, I usually like remixes. It's just that when you've listened to a track so many times, a remix may come as a very unpleasant suprise because you've grown accustomed to the original, but it's usually nice to see a track revived.

I chose 60% because over a bit over half of the remixes I hear are bad. And the second statement kind of makes sense. But would it work the other way around, i.e. you hear the remix many times and then dislike the original? Hmm.

remixes are not made just for the sake of producing.. there are reasons for them to be made

one of them is that the original tune may not be suitable for a dj's style but the remix is. same tune can be played by a progressive, by a trance or hard trance dj and still sound ok in their set just because they picked out the proper remix (I dont think I need to get into examples).

another reason is that a remix freshens up the sound of a song bringing back to life. this happens a lot with classic tracks. imagine if one day Armin started playing Delerium - Silence (Tiesto Remix), no one would have noticed or many would have criticised. But last night he played Above and Beyond remix which in my opinion is not any better than the past remixes but still it appealed to those who listened to ASOT and once it gets released you'll hear it a lot.. the sone basically came back from the dead just because A&B touched it in 2004...

A remix is done for a number of reasons. Obviously it can be a nice way to earn coin on the side, but there are artists who would only remix it if they earnestly felt they could bring something new to the table. Some artists -- and especially classic tracks -- can't really go remixed without much scrutiny and controversy. But it CAN be pulled off, i.e. Hybrid's remixes of a number of them like "Bomb Scare" and "Papua New Guinea".

So in any case, I'd have to hear the end result and compare it to the original. Or in some cases, NOT compare it to the original.

One of the more refreshing, oblique takes I heard on a tune was the Neptunes remix of Daft Punk's "Harder Better Stronger Faster" as featured on Daft Club.

When a remix comes too close to the original, I don't really get the point of that. In some way it is what I'd call a passive collaboration and so fresh input should be given by the remixer while retaining the intangibly wonderful essence of the original.

However, there always exist exceptions... and the beat goes on... (including the Britney remake)

This, exactly is my point! Take a look at my examples: in every Shpongle remix I've heard, the spirit is lost. In the Urban Train case, CG utterly ruin it.

So all the amaturs should leave remixing to the professionals. That would cut down on the "bad percentage" a lot.

and i have to totally disagree about the cosmic gate remix of urban train. its one of my favorite hard trance tunes, plus all the other remixes for that track were amazing!

No they weren't. Every single mix of that tune totally lose every bit of energy the original had turning them into boring nonsense. The CG mix was the only one of them that was listenable but it doesn't come close to the original either.
