Big Buildups

Hi, I was just wondering how techno Dj's such as Chris Liebing created their massive buildups. Specifically, what machine, eg mixers effects units etc., do techno Dj's use. Are effects units commonplace? I saw Chris Liebing recently and he seemed to be able to create massive builups, to the point of distortion, at will. Coming from a trance background I was amazed. Thanks

this is down to (sometimes a combination of) tracks being played through an effect mixer/effects unit, usually a pioneer djm600, pioneer efx500, effects built in to the cdj1000, or a combination of all/any of them. then put in some clever eq work and you have your own breakdown

The only time I saw chris liebing he had, a korg kaoss pad, a alesis air efx unit, a cycloops sampler, a djm 600, 3 decks, 2 cdj's and final scratch.

And I can safely say that every peice of equipment got a good work out for the whole two hours, constantly working.

I think it's fair to say that Techno DJs are some of the hardest working guys in the whole business. But as it's a more minimal style of music it allows a lot of creativity.

true, techno DJ's work the hardest in general. However, James Zabiela takes the piss! i think he is far and away the most technically talented DJ around at the moment.

when he fucks up, he makes it sound like he meant to do it

Umek has a few good livesets as well. He's really got the technique in as well. I believe I got 2 sets from him @ Fuse. The sound quality is not too good but good show-off with fX.

dukes, any chance you can hook me up with hat Cox liveset?
