hehe, i ran into this problem a lot. Some of the winxp cds dont boot. Ive had good luck with Devils Own so far, but other than that its just keep trying. The other problem with those is that in the bootable CDs its missing crypt32.dll which causes a fatal error in windows bootup if you dont have it.

Soooooo usually you have to swap between the bootable and nonbootable to get all the files in there.

98 will see a drive. It might just say you have x gigs of unpartitioned space as it cannot see ntfs files. So do it that way, delete everything remake the partitions and go. At worst, youll get to that point, realize 98 cant see the formatted ntfs stuff, and figure out another way.

Im pretty sure thatll work though.

a win98 boot disk will format to fat32

check in your bios settings that the cdrom boot device is higher in the priority scale than the hdd device, if you have ntfs then you will be able to boot from cd

when you have the option to boot from cd it will only give you a 5 second window that says "press any key to boot from cd-rom" so make sure you're watching the screen when you reboot with the cd in and the boot settings correct

i agree with these blokes
set your bios to boot from your cd FIRST
if that doesnt work, track down a win98 boot disk (a comp geeks best friend)

Presuming tis the cd at fault and your boot order is correct...

First thing, create a Windows XP boot disk. This will probably span over 4 disks. Just search google how to do it if you don't know.

Then boot your computer off the first one. It will then prompt you for the next 3 in turn.

Then insert your cd as it will not need to boot off it now. And then go throught the setup on the cd. Format your drives, delete all partitions, format to ntfs whatever you want. Just do it all there.

If you need anything just let me know.

can't you just burn a random bootable cd in xp?

if so, just boot off that, then when booted wack your xp cd in the drive then run setup.
