Why 3 decks ?

Hi,

I'm a DJ myself, and I rarely get the opportunity to spin with 3 decks. But seriously, what's the point of 3 decks in trance ? If you break up a song after 3 minutes because you can mix a bit faster with 3, the audience will burn you ? Yet I see some guys spinning with 3 decks, and there has to be a good reason for this.. ANyone care to enlighten me ? I might install that third table then, I have one here doing nothing (not a really good one though, but good enough if you're not scratching or anything).

For example, and interview with Marco Bailey (techno DJ) he basically insulted every DJ that spinned with 2 tables instead of 3 because they were technically newbies... he didn't explain himself unfortunately, I always want to improve !

Let me know !

Cheers !

pfft, your hardly a newbie if you spin on 2 decks. for mixing for trance it doesnt really have a use unless you want to use acapellas or scratch.

but on other styles of music like techno, and i do it a bit with drum n bass, you can quite often have 2 tracks playing while your mixing a third, or atleast beatmatch the 3rd while your waiting for the 1st to end so u can mix the 2nd... if that makes sense.

just more freedom but hardly makes people who use 2 decks newbie.

here's the deal:

there's no reason to use 3 decks if you're a trance dj.

if you're a techno dj, you should use 3 decks... you can use 2 and be good, but just makes your life a lot easier with 3.

yeah it gives you more freedom
you should always do whatever you can to make your mixs more interesting
i don't have a third turntable but i have a CD turntable and two turntables. one thing i found that is fun to do is take a breakbeat song, loop the beat and then mix out of my ending track into the break beat loop and then mix in a new 4/4 on the floor track under that break beat, making that 4/4 on the floor track a break beat track.
theres lots of stuff you can do. just expirament

I saw a breaks DJ a couple of weeks ago, "Czech" on 2 main decks, and he had an assistant DJ on a 3rd deck loading up new vinyl regularly and appeared to be cuing it or beatmatching, I'm not sure what. I couldn't figure out what he was doing, too dark and distant but it all sounded good.

I wouldnt say theres very much of a point to spinning 3 decks of trance, but theres lots of other stuff that pretty much requires 3 decks to be interesting (min. techno)

there is 1 use for 3 decks if you play trance, and that is when your name is john askew. he lays techno beats and shit over trance and it sounds fantastic and very different.

other than that, there isn't much point with trance.

techno is a completely different kettle of fish, and its lots of fun playing 3 decks. i disagree with what marco bailey said though. although it is actually technically easy to just mix one track into another (when compared to having 3 decks on the go and beatmatching 2 tracks at once), he shouldn't go about dissing people for it, as the music that gets played in this fashion is often very restrictive i.e. trance.

John Askew, good DJ and nice bloke.

Have to disagree a little with Tu-face though. You can work with three decks in trance admittedly not like a techno DJ would. (PS heard your techno mix and like it... nice work).

I like teasing people with records.
Take Mike Koglin - Pushed on. I like playing Push - Strangeworld over the top of it. If I see people get excited by this I will drop strange world two or three records later (Nearly always). When you use records and know the keys you can actually get creative with trance too when it comes to using three decks. It's almost like doing a live mash up. Always good to have the upcomming records prepared though before you start doing stuff like this.

I still think it's wrong that DJs should disrespect other DJs for not playing the same as they do. That actually makes Marco Bailey seem a bit ignorant in my mind. And let's face it, a turn tablist can to more things with one deck than most DJs can to on three. It's alway relevant to the music though.

Cheers
Nem

hehe, that mix was done on 2 turntables in march before i got the cd deck cheers for having a listen

there was always the odd mash-up i used to do when i played trance, but it is more difficult if anything. you are right, if you hit the keys right then it will work, but i was never one for harmonic mixing
