For those of you who have built desk units for your TTs, what kind of wood do you suggest that's stable and cheap?

I forget the name of the stuff I used, but go to home Depot or your favorite Home improvement store, and look for a lightweight type of wood, but does not flex. 3/4" is sufficient, but you want a wood that is lightweight, but strong at the same time so if you haul your gear around like I do, it won't be too bad on the back. Stay away from Marine plywood, as that shit is way too heavy. You'll know what I'm talking about when you look at the different types of wood there and you find the lightweight stuff that does not flex. Oh yeah, no particle board either...if it gets wet it's ruined, and its too damn heavy.

Built mine not long ago, used MDF, 16mm for sides, double layer for top, 12mm for floor and shelves. Make sure to put a plywood/masonite backing on it to help side to side sway.

If I can find my plans I'll try to post them, was a massive effort, around 2.5m long, a touch over 900mm high, a large stereo in the centre and shelves on either side. You can split it into three parts - two shelf units and the centre section.

Veneered everyhthing with an Oak veneer to make it look a lot better. Its a good idea, it makes it look awesome.
Search for "DJ Table", there has been a topic a while ago about it, several good ideas and plans.

I've built a little stereo shelf unit and a DJ table using 3/4 inch laminated pine shelf boards, and 1/2 inch Baltic Birch plywood. Used carpenter's glue, that stuff is amazingly strong so you don't need fancy joints.

The pine shelf boards are available in widths up to about 24 inches or so and various lengths. Cheap and not too heavy, easy to saw, paint, etc.

The Baltic plywood is available in cabinet wood supply stores (Windsor Plywood here in Canada) and it is slightly expensive, comes in 5x5 foot sheets thickness 1/8 up to 3/4, it is stronger than regular plywood since it has more layers. You can use thinner Baltic compared to regular plywood so your DJ table will be lightweight. Shelves for small light equipment can be from 1/4 inch Baltic.
