I always thought if the needle weight is too much/ or too little, the sound quality deteriates...

Well, the majority of my records play fine at that setting. If my other records would have this problem, I would have mentioned it. I'll try to set it to 3.0 and see if that will minimize cracks and pops. M44-7 has very little overall wear on records anyway.
